It's based on Morrat's (sp?) donkey illusion I believe from last century. He did a lot of inovative work with mi**ors.

Lance's was a Sawing a Horse in Half gag, with a costume horse that then transformed into a real horse. In terms of method, from what I see, it has more in common with Morritt's Vanishing Elephant (performed by Houdini), than his Disappearing Donkey.
It's all in the reflexes.

I believe the disappearing donkey and vanishing elephant which Morritt's created for Houdini as you say, used the same concept.

While the basic underlying principle may be the same, there is a distinct difference in the application and method.
It's all in the reflexes.

It's a fun routine.
I believe the donkey illusion used a circular hole in the front of the cabinet which is also what Lance's prop uses. Hence the same application of the general principal. The elephant box I believed didn't use this type of opening. Was it just curtains? Jim

The Donkey cabinet did not use a circular hole. Front, sides, top and back all opened.
Houdini's Elephant cabinet, which was not considered a good trick, had a circular opening at the front and back. Most didn't even have a proper view inside, and those who did had a very restricted view. The two effects are quite different from one another, though there is an evolutionary connection for certain.
It's all in the reflexes.

I just checked Steinmeyer's book and you're right. The elephant seems to have more in common with the barrel concept using the round hole at either end. Thanks.

Now Washed up in Branson has a whole new meaning. LOL
My house and the theater that I perform at and my stoages seem to be in tack. My family is all well and good. We slept through this. One of my storage doors was ripped off the track and the door was flapping in the wind. This is where I keep all of my Ata cases. That is the worse thing that happened to my family.. We were so luck though. The 76 strip got the mess beat out of it. Lost of motels and hotels and restaurants had the roofs ripped off. a number of theaters were pretty messed up also. THis will take months for some places to get back up and some places will be flattened. Our theater is on the main strip and didn't get a scratch.. while places all around our theater were beaten to the ground. Must of had some Angles looking out for our Theater.. Thank you for the concern. Taylor Reed
