Here are the nominees.
Predictions? Preferences? I've seen the Descendants, The Artist, and The Help. The acting in all three was uniformly excellent. I enjoyed the Descendants when I saw it, though I can't say it has stayed with me. The Artist has a lot to like about it, a stunt that is perfectly executed, and even more admirable to think that this perfect tribute to a piece of Americana was acted largely by French performers. The Help, on the other hand, was truly one of the truly most awful movies I've ever seen. Offensive in so many ways. I've bolded my predictions (not necessarily preferences!)for winners BEST PICTURE "The Artist," Thomas Langmann, producer "The Descendants," Jim Burke, Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor, producers "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," Scott Rudin, producer "The Help," Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, producers "Hugo," Graham King and Martin Scorsese, producers "Midnight in Paris," Letty Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum, producers "Moneyball," Michael De Luca, Rachael Horovitz and Brad Pitt, producers "The Tree of Life," Nominees to be determined "War Horse," Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, producers LEAD ACTOR Demián Bichir, "A Better Life" George Clooney, "The Descendants" Jean Dujardin, "The Artist" Gary Oldman, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy " Brad Pitt, "Moneyball" LEAD ACTRESS Glenn Close, "Albert Nobbs" Viola Davis, "The Help" Rooney Mara, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Meryl Streep, "The Iron Lady" Michelle Williams, "My Week With Marilyn" BEST DIRECTOR Michel Hazanavicius, "The Artist"[b] Alexander Payne, "The Descendants" Martin Scorsese, "Hugo" Woody Allen, "Midnight in Paris" Terrence Malick, "The Tree of Life" SUPPORTING ACTOR Kenneth Branagh, "My Week with Marilyn" Jonah Hill, "Moneyball" Nick Nolte, "Warrior" [b]Christopher Plummer, "Beginners" Max von Sydow, "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" SUPPORTING ACTRESS Bérénice Bejo, "The Artist" Jessica Chastain, "The Help" Melissa McCarthy, "Bridesmaids" Janet McTeer, "Albert Nobbs" Octavia Spencer, "The Help" WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY) "The Descendants," Alexander Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash "Hugo," John Logan "The Ides of March," George Clooney & Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon "Moneyball," Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. Sorry for the screw-up on the bolding. Should have Christopher Plummer for best supporting actor, and Michel Hazanavicius for Best Director.

I'd like to see Pitt or Oldman win, and Nolte. No preferences on Best Actress....as a prediction, I think it's going to be close between Davis and Williams.

I hope Meryl wins. I haven't seen the movie yet, but she deserves one just for being consistently great over the course of 30 odd years, and it's probably her last chance for another.

I, too, would like to see Meryl Streep win. But Michelle Williams might be the dark horse in this race.

Only to keep our record of disagreement at 100%, I'd like to say that I found "The Help" to be one of the most enjoyable, inspiring, and moving pictures of the year. And thankfully, that seems to be the majority opinion.

How was the show? Did it go long? All I saw of it was a clip on line of Ryan Seacrest getting dumped on with urn ashes.
Well, that, and a photo of Angelina showing some gam.
