So my assistant is a very talented hooper (hula hooping) and we are trying to think of illusions that would involve a hoop/s. Instead of using a hoop for a levitation.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Or ideas to get me started? Thanks, TJ |

How about using them in a modified "hoop illusion"?...like a slick post?

Get a child's swimming pool and gallons of bubble-making liquid. The hoop could make huge bubbles then.
Do some color changing hoops. Here is an idea, but it would take a lot of work. She is spinning the hoops and one starts to float up and then around the stage. A comedy bit could have a running gag of a hoop rolling across the stage. Just a few I thought of. |

As luck would have it, Jim Gerrish's PVC Pipe Illusions Book 3 has an effect called "Hula Hoop Tambourine Illusion", which doesn't have much PVC pipe in it at all, but it IS made from plastic Hula Hoops which qualified it for the book. It uses Dollar Store Hula Hoops to make a production devices for silks, doves, rabbits, and one or two people. There, I've done my job and mentioned a PVC Pipe Illusion.
Hula Hoops hung with a shower curtain are also used in other Illusions and some Escapes, but mainly as accessories. Hula Hoops can now be fitted with strings of LED Christmas lights so they glow in the dark, which can open up some new ideas for making floating hoops and so on.

No one mentioned Dick Zimmerman's hoop act.

I was going to John but you beat me to it.
I would also look in the old Goldston books. There was an act called Hoop Rolling that might be adaptable to today's hoola hoops. Richard

I saw a clown at Ringling, when I was a kid, that did a four ring routine standing on a chair and the finally was getting one ring stuck on the chair and having to drag the chair out of the ring.
It was a showstopper of a routine.

Jay, isn't it funny how someone with a creative, original take on something seems to remain burned into our memory cells?
This inspires me! Jimmy |

Not necessarily an "illusion" but isolation work with smaller hoops, ie hand hoops, is a great way to tie magic and hooping together. If you're not familiar try a youtube search. My girlfriend and I also perform together, and she is a hooper as well. You can see some of her hooping in the second half of this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmwBCDJ9ogk
