I love hats... have a ton of them! Aside from multifunctional, they provide instant character ID. The one in my avatar is just one of them, and goes with a particular character.
I have an old beat up black Fedora that I sometimes wear, but otherwise use frequently for a Benson Bowl routine (makes for a lighter load to travel with if you don't want to lug around a brass bowl, too). My hat easily holds a large wooden cannonball, or during the Fall, a pumpkin. That same hat is also great for the snap card trick, as it will easily crease into that double trough thing needed for the trick. All the stiffener has long been knock out of it, so it can change looks quickly, and character like Red Skelton used to do. A hat is also great for signed card in hat. Think Tommy Wonder's Ring Box for similar method, but you can also just thumb it in during a bit of choreography and misdirection.

Bob Read has a great routine using a hat called Transpo Tumbler. He put out a booklet on it, but it seems to be hard to find these days. The good news is that it's also on disc 4 of his DVD set, and I think it's on L&L's The World's Greatest Close-up Magic vol 1.

There is the Cake in the Hat trick. Also, Tarbell has rising cards from hat, and cooking popcorn in a hat. In Conjuring Anthology, Jim Steinmeyer takes another look at the popcorn in hat trick.

I have a trilby from Philip Treacy... and I never wear it these days. I bought it in London a while ago. Using it for magic could be a good excuse to start wearing it again!

I was just reading this thread to see what else had been added, and I noticed that one of the old magic theatre standards has not yet been mentioned, unless my eyes have missed it: The hat coil. I use it in my parlor show, although I do not use paper but rather a large coil of wide satin ribbon which can be put on a winder and used over and over.

I've been doing the routine from "Benny and Joon" (I think that's the name of the movie...) where I can't keep the hat on my head and the hat keeps on trying to run away from me. I've done it with my top hat, my fedora and my bowler.
Other bits you can do are are the rabbit in the hat (a groan echoes throughout the Café), flowers from a hat, sticking your arm/leg into a hat, baking a cake in a hat, pouring water into a hat and having the hat stay dry, hat balancing, vanishing cane into hat, wand from hat, the "Detective card trick", vanishing objects with the hat, have a three of clubs sewn into the inside top of the hat, and of course- every busker's favorite trick: Passing the hat. -Nate |

When I have a hat on the ground I'll sometimes put my water bottle in it to weigh it down to stop it being blown over by the wind.
I use two hats most times - one for trickle money and balloon payment, and the other on my head for shade and hatting. I used to have a soft-toy rabbit in my trickle hat [rabbit in magician's hat idea].
The presentation makes the magic.
