I've been involved off and on (mostly off) in stagecraft since I was a child. I've done school plays, standup in NY and NJ and I was a theater critic (i.e., stage) for a small-town newspaper for a number of years.
I hope to do cabaret, at-home parties and stage mentalism but I'm not too crazy about the idea of doing walkaround. Call it an allergy if you like. How important to a successful mentalism career (in the US) is doing walkaround? I know I would be cutting off a revenue stream but I might be OK with that. If I'm leaving too much money on the table I guess I might grit my teeth and do it. If anyone cares to reveal such information, what percentage of your revenues comes from walkaround? Is it possible to be a commercially successful mentalist without ever doing it? I'm interested in your thoughts, especially the more experienced folks. Have any of you, by choice or just by the way thinks worked out, never done much walkaround? Thanks, RocKy

Not important at all. Mentalism is inherently stage IMHO! Closeup is fun but not required. Use it to improve your persona/chops.

I agree. Very few of all the mentalists I know personally, perform walkaround. I personally feel attempting to do this is often perceived as magic or some type thereof.
To me when I think of mentalism, I think only of stage. Not doing walkaround or closeup has never been an issue for me as in decades of performing I've never once been asked to do or if I do walkaround. |

I suppose it depends.
Everyone I know, and by that I mean personally know, does both. But they also work the corporate market. As for me, "now", all I do is smaller venue, strolling, and seated work. Then again, I'm what is referred to as a psychic entertainer. Ton |

I've never done walkaround, nor do I care to. I prefer to perform a set show before an entire audience.
Just had a funny thought- Did you ever hear of a comic doing walkaround? You know, just go around telling jokes to small groups... |

Walk around magic sure, mentalism, not so much. Mentalism is less modular then magic is, and I think walk around rather cheapens it. (mentalism)

I suppose I should have used the word "intimate" to describe what I do.
As a psychic entertainer, I don't need a stage to work. I'm not a comedian, I don't have that skill set to talent, nor am I am I a stage illusionist. If my client wants me in a hospitality room, I have no problem with it. I can do a reading anywhere and make it an entertaining experience for the people present. Reading thoughts, for me, is no different. There is nothing "cheap" about what I do, or how I work. Tony |

Tony-
I have a lot of friends who do readings that way. I've never considered that to be "walkaround" in the sense that the term is being used here. Nor do I consider it cheap in any sense of the word. (Unless you do it for free. ) When I hear "walkaround" I think "table-hopping." Best- Bob |

Someone else had mentioned "cheap". I agree on the walk around, I should have referred to it as "intimate". Thank you, Tony |

I know for myself, if I did not have walk-around (table hopping) to offer clients I would definitely lose income. When booking a stand-up performance, I will often ask if their agenda includes a social hour or some other type of event where walk-around could be used. I explain that since I am already being booked adding this additional service can be done at a reduced price. The truth is you are already going to be there, you might as well add a few C notes to your pocket.
I personally enjoy going around the room meeting people during this time letting them get to know me. It is nice and works to your advantage for the room to hear laughter and applause before you go on stage. It’s also a good time to scope out possible volunteers. |

You could read Jack Kent Tillar's Solo book, the sub-title of it is "the walkaround mentalist"...

While much of what I do in the walkabout portion of the night is the "mental magic" category (Director's Cut, Invisible Deck etc) it does allow me to scope out the audience before I do a stage show...and provides a little extra income for the booking. The things I learn in that walkabout period about people and who the audience IS proves so valuable to me that I'd do it for free. And to be completely honest, the walkabout gets my motor running and vastly eases the pre-show nerves I ALWAYS get. David

I do it very rarely. There is a lot more money in stage performance in the NY area.

Both performance arenas are important in my experience and work, but I don't think that either one is dependant of the other.
Some performers perform in close-up/intimate/1on1 or for a small group and others only work is a stage. I do both and even a secret third one. Best

I suppose it depends on how you frame the experience. I'm typically hired to bring people together at corporate hospitality and networking events... people who may otherwise be uncomfortable mingling with strangers. It's a "connecting" role and *very* valuable to the host. No "tricks" really, but very personal mindreading in small groups. Group palmistry (the Sheila Lyon way) works very well in these situations.

Strolling, or walking around the event, Tony can read the palms of small groups of people at the same time, finding interesting and sometimes humorous facets about each and every person in the group, entertaining as well as enlightening, and getting the group talking as he moves on to the next group. I guess it all depends on how you define strolling, and your personal opinions. Tony |
