When I first ever performed, it wasn't card magic or mentalism, it was as a bizarrist...so I have always kept a beady (higley's) eye on this forum, with fondness of course... anyway, because doc steve posted what he did, here's something to blow the dust off.. an old story, that isn't exactly spooky, but could turn into something that is...
_____________________________________________________________ It was strange, I found this envelope inside a book I'd bought in a junk-shop. Neither the book nor the envelope meant anything to me emotionally...not at first at least. I don't even remember the day or where exactly I'd bought the ***ed thing. I know it was about a year ago, but that was it. Maybe it was...longer? I'm doubting myself now, and that's silly of me. Tell me, do you believe in...time travel? Indulge me on this – let's just consider for one moment, one briefest of seconds. A grain of sand, one thought in the hourglass of our mind...And if we can just for now – entertain the notion that we could somehow send ourselves into the future . Physically or mentally, and witness an event before it happened? Wouldn't that be...fantastical?! And also, I admit, more than a little creepy... But I digress, this envelope I mentioned. Something strange happened to me when I found it, inside the book. It had my name written on it, amongst a myriad of others. But mine was not crossed out. The rest had bold horizontal lines through them, no longer needed. I felt that white hot shock run through my jolted system just for a second. And then I laughed, albeit a tiny bit nervously. I had sat this envelope, on top of the book I found it in for nearly a week. Kept it by the phone in fact as a reminder that, one morning, I would feel brave enough to open the thing and read the small message that was inside it, waiting for “me”... Anyway, a week ago – March 19th, I had a phone call early morning. It was a good friend of mine – she rang me to say that she'd just come out of hospital...thankfully, it was to squeeze out her baby. I was so pleased for her and happy news of a healthy little boy. After we said goodbye I was so full of glee I grabbed that ***ed letter and opened it. And what I read...i did not want to believe... It read - “Christina's little boy – fit and healthy! March 19th!” I could have collapsed right there and then. My ears filled with the swarm of white-noise and my heart sprinting up my throat. My lungs frozen, my tongue fat and dry. Three seconds, three little grains of sand that turned my whole life around. The paper seemed mottled and old. The book was from 2001 though. And I wondered what was the original resting place of this old, tattered envelope. Ever since then, I've felt...different. Changed. Not spooked still, just...i can't quite explain. Forgive me. I feel foolish now. I felt wonderous I suppose. And that familiar feeling, child like I think by nature. Of being happy to entertain the thought of the mysterious, the unsolvable. I enjoyed discovering that feeling once more. And I wanted someone else to experience that too. that's why...a week ago...i sent the book and envelope to you. Do you have the parcel? Please bring it to the table and open it up...” Parcel is opened, inside is the book, inside that is a tatty old envelope with the person's name on it, yours crossed out. You gingerly poke the envelope, as if its alive, with your pencil and open the flap. “Here, you read it...” They take the paper out, and it read.... Well...whatever the hell you want...its a billet p*****... PS - it would also mean you could ring in a gimmicked book for a word test...

I wish everything I got blamed for was this good!
I love this story! In fact, the feeling - that feeling you describe of having your reality twisted, in a realistic, disturbing yet entralling way - is what we should be striving for in our work. The hypnotist in me loves the story because it suggests those feelings to your participant, who I. Turn should "remember" your trick in the same terms, with any luck. Thank you Iain for such a little gem - I hope others can see the gold within its workings rather than skimming through to the 'dissapointing' method! Steve
