I've been doing the Anderson Torn and Restored in most of my birthday shows. For age 5 to 8 I perform this as a 'mathematical' trick. "I have one newspaper, I tear it ... how many pieces do we have now?" Everybody guesses 2. "OK, I tear it again. How many now?" Most of the children will guess this right, but there is always somebody who yells 3! From 4 to 8 to 16 - getting more and more difficult. Now the parents come to aid their children. (Perfect to involve the parents.) At the end - no it's not 64, just one. For me the main advantage is the interaction and the counting takes the heat of the obvious as stated above. Everybody is counting and the restoration is for most of the children a total surprise.

The Gene Anderson Newspaper tear is the best
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.
