Do you think the "Suit jacket Escape" would work well with kids?

I perform it in my older kid's show. I would say 8 and up is good for this great routine.

Hi Tony,
Have you done this for young children (e.g., maybe 5-6 years) or, as Paul mentions, 8 and up may be a minimum. I've thought about doing this for young children, but wondered if they could understand what was happening. Any thoughts are appreciated. Paul, do you use a similar patter for young and old crowds or do you alter it? Thanks. Regards, Steve

Qua-Fiki has a Lumberjack Shirt escape in his book "Escape For Teens" on my site (not limited to teens, of course!). It uses an XXL shirt with a plaid design, and a roll of duct tape. It's more than just an escape, because the last lumberjack to wear it left behind some strange items, which he keeps "finding" in the shirt and pushing them out onto the floor. Kids love to duct tape him inside the shirt and get hysterical when the crazy items keep getting pushed out as the escape proceeds. An adult might have to search for an XXXL or larger shirt, but they do exist and you don't have to mess up your suit jacket.

I think it should work fine and the kids wont' be able to escape, but I'd have some duct tape handy just in case.

At first I thought the thread title was a typo for "strait" jacket. But there is a "suit" jacket escape?? That sounds like it might be fun! Where can I find more on this?

Not many 5 and 6 year olds in the UK know who Houdini is. It may be different in the US but I am kind of surprised.
Poz has a routine in his book that is based around Batman you could update it so it's about a current character the children are interested in like Ben Ten or ummm Batman. |

To answer Steve's question, no I would not do it for younger kids. Eight, nine, ten and upwards. It was never part of my birthday show, but often for family shows, festivals, etc.

One routine that I would use is "Ropes through Body". (I would normally use this on an unruly child, warning him that if he didn't behave, the magic wouldn't work, etc.)
I know this is a penetration effect and not an escape but you could embelish it to an escape. What I mean by this is tie the ropes on yourself. You could also add handcuffs or a thumbtie or whatever you fancy. You could also include the business of having a curtain lowered and raised showing yourself in various stages of escape, as per the comedy thumbtie and the suit jacket escape. All the above is just an idea for you to play with if you so wish. |

I used to perform this for 6 year old kids and up 'It was a comedy routine and worked great.
One important thing is to use an adult to examine and tie you up .One the adult volunteer trays it on the all understand it would be amazing if you manage to escape. |
