Okay so every so often the "what's the best deck," poll gets posted on online forums. Biggest problems with these polls have been in inclusiveness. There is only so many poll options you can post on a forum.
As a way to have a little fun, and get the word out on my new website, I have created a few pages that allow me to run an ongoing poll that includes all of the 35 decks I have reviewed plus a few extra that I have yet to review. http://www.custom-playing-card.com/best.html So If you are a card geek like me, go check out the new site and have a little fun while you are at it! Thanks very much. Glad you enjoy it.
I've just built 63 pages in about the last month and my head is spinning! lol But ultimately the goal is to have a site that is fun and informative for card magicians and flourishers, who love their cards as much as they love the magic they perform with them. If anyone has any ideas for the site, or things they would like to see, I should soon have some "contact us" forms up. In the meantime you can contact me at any of the major magic forums. Just an update. A few folks on other forums mentioned that they are not facebook users. I added a form you could fill out so that you can vote without using the facebook "like" feature. Just an effort to be a bit more inclusive.
Cheers, Erik p.s. @ yabi- Thanks! |

Thanks for all those reviews... awesome stuff...!
I couldn't see too many you're missing... certainly you seem to have all the good ones I've seen. There are a few decks from Dal Negro (the card, not the plastic decks) in 'HQ' finish, and Masenghini, owned by the same company but apparently produced by different people on different presses. Also Grimaud, in France, and Trefl, in Poland. I'm not sure it's worth your while hunting those down; they're expensive and great for general play but not so good for magic. I found the Dal Negro decks interesting, but I wouldn't use them. Very, very firm stock and quite rounded corners, making 2+ concealments harder for me. The Masenghini decks were better (e.g. the 'Poker 900' deck). Again, very firm stock. Nothing too exciting. I could just about do an ACR (with all those DLs) with the Masenghinis, but I'd really struggle with the Dal Negros. I tried to find a classic deck from Grimaud with English courts (Ace and Jack, Queen, King rather than 1 and Valet, Dame, Roi) but I couldn't, which is a shame. The design of some of their older decks is awesome - even the pip cards just look classy. The cut and finish on the decks I did find was OK, but not great. On a par with Bikes, maybe. I totally agree on the Fourniers. Best I've seen, too. DLs are a breeze. I'll do an occasional S-fan, and they fan well enough for that, once they're broken in. So, thanks for putting all of those reviews up! |

There are some decks that you mentioned that I really would like to get my hands on. In fact, about a year and a half ago, back when all these existed on forum posts, I did a whole series of European cards.I reviewed all I could get my hands on at the time. That's when I did the Waddington's, Carta-Mundis, Anglos, and Piatniks(I had already reviewed the Fourniers). I really would like to see more of those companies break into the custom card market. The overall stock quality of the European cards is something that USPCC can't really match. However, I know what you mean about 2+O moves with a lot of those cards. That extra rounded corner takes a lot of work to get used to and it is easy for the cards to slip apart if you are not careful. I think after about three months of reviewing those cards I finally got the hang of it when I was reviewing the Piatniks. I think if I ever get caught up (I have been ignoring the Ellusionist cards for about three years and I need to catch up) I would love to review some of those. Mostly I would like to introduce more people to the European manufacturers. Most of those cards feel less like a product of state of the art, precision manufacturing, and more like the work of old world craftsmen. Anyways, Thanks for your thoughts, and educating me on some other cards to go track down. Cheers, Erik |
