I love the Hot Rod. It's simplicity makes it the great trick it is.
I saw a performance with it where the performer did the standard color change (paddle), and that was great. I soon mastered all that, but he added one final sleight that I have yet to figure out. At the end of the trick, he rubbed his hands together (with, supposedly, the Hot Rod in them) and then he showed me his empty hands. I can't figure this out. Help!

I would tell how he did it, but I can't because I did not see it. It's possible he did a RP or used a V.

Possibly a "pivot" vanish, or...
(Can't think of the name) The vanish done with the Color Changing Knives (Routine Manipulation II)... Doug |

Or he could have used the E. vanish

He put it in his sock! Ok... Just a guess.
Seriously, if you dig the Hotrod, I strongly suggest Gem Busters. It's a Hotrod routine that starts out like usual, then you smash the rod into a cube shape, then roll it into a ball and then smash the ball into a coin shape. Then you can do all sorts of coin type sleights with this shape. It's a hoot! I swear. |

And another totally different Hot Rod is Shattered from Wolf's Magic, an advertiser here.
I used to make Hot Rods for Hampton Ridge Magic, and probably personally have more of various styles and sizes and shapes than most. But Shattered takes the Paddle Move concept to another plane. BroDavid

Maybe used a topit or a pull.

Thanks everyone.
He was good, and I think that is why I am so baffled. I will work on it some more.

I have seen a hot rod vanish done with a pull that worked well. Nice finish and avoids the examination of the rod.

You can practice with a pencil, popsicle stick, anything... ![]() |

I am thinking Topit for a Hot Rod vanish.
Could use a wooden cig pull.

My guess is he never had the hotrod to begin with, it was an illusion all along.

Firedice27,
Ingenious idea!! Clear-view Hot Rod, combined with Gem Busters...I have now done that... Thanks! You've just given me a reason to break these out once again! Wow, a whole new lease on life for these classics! Another reason I love this Café...! Doug |

What's the best hotrod? Is the brass one that you can examine any good?

I saw the brass hotrod from the audience perspective and I was fooled! Perhaps for the vanish he used a shimmed hotrod w/ a raven!

Any Hot Rod can be examined if you say in your patter you will only change one side...

He could have been lapping it... There are a few magicians who do a sort of sucker/lapping vanish to finish off a hot rod routine...

The old pencil behind the ear vanish would look good.

Maybe he pulled a Houdini and hid it under his tongue.
