I had a gig set up in Atlanta, Georgia for last week for a corporation. At first the contract was for $5,200 for a hour. A couple of days before the gig they wanted it to change because of finance difficulties. I found out their budget was only $4,000. So we changed the contract to $4,000 plus room and board for 20 minutes of mentalism.
The gig went well. I got a standing ovation. Even the president of the corporation came back stage to thank me for what I did. I got back home to Detroit, Michigan a few days later. I did deposit the check in my banking account. 48 hours later I found out the check bounced because of insufficient funds. I was so angry. I tried to call the corporation to speak with the one who signed the contract. I found out the corporation is now closed. What is the best thing for me to do with the bounced check? |

While I am sure this is an April fools joke, how to deal with a bounced check is an item that some may have to deal with.
Here is how:( a bankers perspective) 1) If you fear it will bounce A) over $1000 ask for an official check or cashiers check B) under $1000 the ask for money order or cash 2)if it bounces after deposit A) first take it to the bank it was drawn off of (the name of the bank on the check) and ask to cash it. Depending on the dollar amount they may not BUT you may have them instead convert it to an official check or just open an account and deposit it to withdraw later (each bank will want to do one of three options) B) the account is overdrawn and the check becomes unnegotiable, then you will need to go to the issuer and request another form of payment( might I suggest credit cards or go to the bank together and withdraw the money) This is just a little help for those who don't know what to do in this situation |

The best way to deal with a bounced check is to contact the local prosecutor and get guidance from him or her. Writing a cold check is a crime. People are much more likely to pay up if they can go to jail as opposed to just getting sued.

Intent is sometimes hard to prove but I have to believe every state makes it a crime to knowingly write a check that know will bounce. My main point is rather than hire an attorney or even spend time trying determine what the law is, just call the prosecutor's office (many have a bad check department) and ask them. |

Why did you guys mess it up? I bet a newbie would have believed the story. Next year let's keep it secret to capture a newbie with his hands tied behind his back to see if he will be the April Fool for the year.

Just trying to be helpful. And I am an attorney---$4000 for 20 minutes seems reasonable....
