Readers are not mentalists. In my opinion, however, ALL mentalists should have a solid foundation in how to read. Not necessarily tarot or palmistry; even just strong cold reading skills are enough.
There's so much information unknowingly provided by a spectator that will be apparent to you as a reader, but not as a layperson or 'lay-mentalist', as it were, it would be crazy not to employ those skills. It will enhance any mentalist's performance, and goes a long way in cementing your credibility as someone who can read minds. Pr*-show may be great, but think how much more powerful it COULD be if you were ALSO able to provide intimate information about the person (or what they're thinking of) that was never written down. |

Lots of different views. This is good. At least no one is bashing readers. I will go down below now.

They are afraid to bash us. They know we can put a hex on them.

Although I had looked into Readings and even delved into Tarot systems. As I am sceptical abouut such matters I didn't think I could really use them. I am now a believer. I recently had a situation where I did a small reading for a friend of a friend. Her reaction was intrigue and slight amazement. A real emotional response. The kind I wish my mentalism had. As entertainment I shall be exploring further.

Be careful. This is strong stuff. You can do a lot of good or you can do a lot of harm. If you stick to palmistry or anything which is applicable to character analysis or vague generalities about the future you are probably on safe ground. In other words brief entertainment type readings. However, although the Tarot can be used in brief entertainment situations it tends to be more for in depth sessions and here you are dealing with people's worries and problems. If you do a card trick and screw it up you just look an idiot. If you mess up a reading you can ruin someone's life. With the Tarot and more intense readings you are walking an ethical tightrope. Don't fall off.

Migwar - gotta say, visionquest is right about this. And so are you.
It was close to a year ago when I figured out how powerful a reading can be. Did one on a lark the day after seeing Paul Draper's video on Anthropological Cold Reading on the McBride site. Just goofing around with a friend who was in town and had stopped by for supper. I've never had a reaction of near-tears from a rope trick. There's nothing you can do to follow a good reading if you view it as performance. It should be entertaining, in my opinion, but that doesn't mean not genuine. It means you keep the interest engaged. Above all, my advice is to think a lot about what could go wrong in a reading. Could you turn up a card that scares a client? Could you have someone who knows more than she lets on about a system and knows if you are trying to spin a negative reading into a positive? What would you do in that situation? If you just want to have fun, look into palmistry. I'm starting to learn a bit about palm reading lately and a subject that used to leave me cold is starting to become fascinating. If you prefer an oracle that is potentially more hard-core, there are a lot out there. Tarot is probably the most famous, but regular playing cards are under-rated, I think. Richard Webster said somewhere that when you've been practicing cold reading for long enough, you may well start to believe you are psychic. Interesting observation from someone who writes for both the performer and the audience. Enjoy, but there's a responsibility that can be daunting. -Patrick |

Please listen to these posts...readings are more powerful than you can imagine.
You can keep things a bit lighter by only doing readings that are character readings. With tarot and similar oracles you will usually be asked to talk about some personal problem. Safer readings are palm, lo shu numerology (tic tac toe numerology), handwriting and doodles. The last two options are nicely combined in Rudy Hunter's "Draw Me a Tree" dvd. It is around twenty bucks or so. They draw a tree and sign it. You read the drawing and their signature. When recommending this dvd I always suggest you keep it all positive. Rudy Hunter's take on the weeping willow tree has a little weeping in it...instead lay it down like a weeping willow lazily hanging over a river on a quiet summer day. Go with those emotions for that type of tree. The rest of the dvd is great as it is. |
