Hello All. I've been talking to a few builders and reading up on figure making for a while. In fact, I've probably spent more time on Ventriloquism than magic over the past two weeks. I was really inspired by a member here with the nick MANAL. His name escapes me but I think its James. I decided to try out moulding my own head. The book, Puppet making can be fun helped alot. However, I was really lost with the kind of Clay to use. Ended up getting Air Hardening Clay. And I hope to ship Rio to a conversion dummy maker to give him touch ups, and attach the mechanics. Any idea who I should go for? Tell me what you think about this project. Its my second attempt at a head cast.

Hey Kyle,
If I were you, I would do a lot more practicing with sculpting before actually getting to the final stages of molding, mechanizing and finishing.
Just do some sculpture studies where you work on proper anatomy.. For instance - for 1 project, just sculpt a nose... or an ear... Then a mouth..
This will help you a lot.. Also try working from reference pictures instead of just winging it.
I just think that you shouldn't jump into the expense of finishing a puppet when I know you could do better with 10 or 15 more practice head under you belt.
Good luck with it!

Damien, thanks for the advice. I do hope of converting this head piece into a functioning dummy. I'd say it's somethin that means a lot. My first proper head mould. For e practice, yes I agree I do need more practice. I probably need to use another type of clay as well. I guessing air hardening clay is not the best for making edits on the face.
