Wanted to share what I found while reading "The Old and New Magic" by H.R. Evans (1906) pg 27 & 27.

About 1750, Pinetti devised and performed "Theophrastus Paracelsus" in which "a dove was fastened, by means of two ribbons about its neck, to two opposite columns. On the instant a picture of the dove, or even the shadow of the suspended bird, was pierced by a sword, the dove itself was beheaded, although it had not been disturbed, and the severed and still bleeding head, and the rest of the body, fell separately to the ground............This experiment recalls an old superstition , namely, that evil can be wrought upon a person by injury to a picture of him, accompanied by a spoken incantation. It is the so called "Picture charm".

Please do not confuse this as trying to say Teller copied Pinetti. I do not know if Teller knows about Theophrastus Paracelsus. I am simply sharing I came across, whilest studying an e-tome of magical history.

An idea he stole from Brandon. Who, in the mid 1500's performed a very similar effect where he caused a pigeon to fall dead from the rafters after pricking a hand Shadow of a bird he had made with his dagger.

Funny you should post Payne. I was just reading in "Magic & It's Professors" - H.R.Evans - 1902- an illusion by Martinka Magic Shop called "An Apple of Paracelsus".

Paracelsus of Hohenheim(1493-1541) is said to have killed a former friend by piercing his shadow with a dagger.

Martinka produced the illusion as an apple on a spike, casting a shadow on a piece of white paper. As the performer slices at the shadow on the paper, the apple is also sliced and the piece falls to the ground. The placement of apple and candle to cast the shadow is different from Teller's 'Shadows'. I leave it up to others to look up more if intersted.

Since Martinka was formed in 1877, and the book was published in 1902, we may have about a span of 25 year for this particular development of the illusion.
