Dirk,
In Magic Magazine of June 2012 (page 17) Teller says: (about the copyright granted in 1983) (-) it protects "what the audience sees, the action and the story, not how the trick is done. That's irrelevant from a copyright point of view. It is protected as a pantomime." So Dirk I don't understand where you are talking about and I quote your text: " Only the act can be!" In short: what Teller calls a PANTOMIME is the same as what you call the ACT. That's what is called a contradiction. |

Selcouth: Don’t think you should leave the forum for this.
Besides magicians, those who write here are human and sometimes our actions do not have the result we expect. I encourage you to continue participating in this Café forum talking about magic (which is what we all should do) |

I must be going nuts, I thought this Penn and Teller conversation was either longer or in another forum at the Café.
Et tu, Spartacus?

P&T expose their own stuff or magic that is public domain. There is a difference.

Penn and Teller rarely expose "their own stuff". Have you seem them expose "Shadows"?
Exposure is exposure- it all degrades magic. There is no difference. How long must we listen to the lemmings bleat this inane nonsense? It is starting to sound like 1984...

It's his property and he can do with it whatever he wants.

Ah, I see. But that is what court is for, no?
What is his "property"? The idea? The method? The presentation? Certainly not the rose... or is it? After all, the is TELLER!

I believe Teller is suing for copyright infringement because he had the effect copyrighted back in the 80's and he is also suing for damages because this person was selling the rights to his trick for around $3,000.

$3000?? Seriously?
Wonder if Teller will sue those who buy it and use it? Or, worse, expose it on national TV so that it loses its mystique...

Sounds like a big case of karma, if you ask me. Teller is talented and knows his stuff, but he got rich, in part, off of exposing and parodying magic that he didn't invent.
So now he's upset because someone is cashing in on one of his creations. Boo hoo. Hypocrite.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

Fortunately this thread has been reconducted. There are a pair of messages written by me that have lost his sense as the precedent post were edited. Could any moderator edit them too, please?
Thanks |

Apperently, there seems to be a sequal to the never ending story Teller – Bakardy!!
The rose still seems to live, as we can see Bakardy again on You tube with his precious flower! A whole new presentation, which in no way is comparable with the original act of Teller… I doubt that Teller will be able to remove it this time… This time, everyone can see that Bakardy takes the illusion to a much higher level. I think this is an incredible improvement of the trick! Teller, eat your heart out! If you want to see the clip, go to You tube and search for “The Bakardy rose” |

Bakardy can go to hell. What a loser. This effect is Teller's heart and soul, and it's patented. I hope he gets his day in court and Bakardy's nonsense is put to rest.
It's all in the reflexes.

That's a brilliant read and insight. Never really warmed to P&T but he's just zoomed up in my estimation. The British Library plot is inspired and shows true dedication.
