As mentioned above I did say to Russ at the shoot that this is the first time I have seen this type of material that is very workable.
This was filmed at my residency and I spoke to one of the spectators ( Sam, the guy who in was in the clips with the blonde girl). He was an off duty waiter and he was blown away even the following week he told me he had been telling everyone about it. Some of the moves I thought was complicated when I first saw them, then in the explanations I was suprised how easy they was once explained. Granted some of this will take some practice and is not as simple as some of the other DVD's RSVP has put out. But this is different and will appeal to others as well. I added some of them moves I saw Dan explain to some of my own routines. He fooled me with a few items as I put it down to complicated sleights like the clip shift (which is not what it was) then when I tried them I did if after a couple of attempts. (and I am not a good technical magician) I think peole are going to like this. Even if they just pick up some new moves to add to their own routines. I was watching Dan in action and could not help but smile at what was going on. This is not the way I perform but made me go home and try some new things out which I did add to my set. Lee.

I've watched Dan do this stuff on a regular basis at Mark Bennett's Illusions Bar in Bristol, probably some of the toughest audiences you will get on a Sat night in tough ole England, especially when the binge drinking has kicked in! Dan developed this stuff for the trenches, no pipe dreams, just good solid magic with a little bit of flash added in. This is why Blaine and Dynamo do this type of stuff, it's what modern audiences want!
As Lee has already pointed out, Dan has managed to take out most of the hard work from some knuckle busting moves, thus enabling even the novice to add some classy looking card magic to their repertoires. Gary Jones.

Met Mr Chard last night while working at Illusions, no pipe dreams here - just good solid effects that he clearly enjoys performing - visual and strong magic - definitely going to be a successful release!

I think this looks awesome! I haven't brought a multi effect DVD since iContact. I rarely invest in them but just from the full length effect demos, I think this looks absolutely brilliant. Im finding I'm purchasing more of RSVPs products. Such quality and just brilliantly hand picked magic. This is a defiant buy for me!

Finally managed to get an account on here, now that ordeal is over with let me introduce myself I'm Daniel chard! I've been performing this material for the last few years at paid gigs, when spectators/magicians ask to see a trick and behind the bar at the now infamous illusions bar here in Bristol!
Before I go any Further I must say that I'm litteray overwhelmed by the response from the top workers like Gary jones, Lee Smith, Iain Moran, Chris Congreave and many others! Thanks to John Carey for having faith in my work and introducing me to Russ! And then obviously a huge thanks to Russ for making this project possible and giving me the chance to release my material to the magic world! The material contained with in is very visual and always has a killer ending ( two of the most important factors I look at when creating magic!), the shoot was shot at lees residency for a live audience. The reactions were great and hows you the power this type of material can have! I knew from day one it would cause controversy as its a first release and some would argue more technical than a lot of other card DVDs out their, however like lee says the routines and effects are really not that difficult to do! Granted some will take more work than others, but you will be rewarded in the long run! My favourite routines are decompression and kickback bonanza. Decompression is my handling of the plot inspired by effects of Steve beam and Robert Moreland, I feel I have added a few touches which make this routine flow really nicely! And kickback bonanza was created due to my love of sandwich effect and the finish always blows people away! Massive thank you to anyone who's already bought the DVD and your support keeps our art alive! If you want a copy of the DVD then it can be obtained through Russ or a signed copy through myself! If you have any questions about any of the effects, the DVD or magic In general feel free to PM me or send an email to my main hotmail address : darkstar_xcm@hotmail.com Kind regards Daniel chard |

This is really good card material here. The teaching is great. I'm still inhaling this and performing some of the material so I'm not yet ready to give a full review, soon though. RSVP has done it yet again.

Nice of Daniel to post here, he seems like a nice guy and as people who are familiar with his work have noted above he may have much success with these effects. I pre-ordered this and I order and enjoy a lot of RSVP products. My opinion from watching (not performing) these effects is still that many are more confusing than magical. On the transposition type effects there is much cozy handling and I was not always sure where the cards were supposed to be. On the other hand the trailers are an accurate representation of what you get and if you like those you will not be disappointed.

At first look, it is really 'Dan and Davey" with his handling. There are a lot of magical moments that make me want to learn all the routines. Good stuff.

Chardshark – Review
Bias disclaimer: I have nothing to do with Daniel and paid for this DVD. Review of the reviewer: I’m a 90% strolling magician who is competent with a range of sleights (perhaps an ‘intermediate’ handler), but I’m not a flourisher. I’m also a fan of keeping things simple when in the trenches, as cards get bent, hands get dry or sticky etc.. As for reviewing style, I try to give a positive and honest critique, rather than criticize or give blind praise. I have tried Streamlined Sandwich at a gig and some of the effects for family friends. Why did I buy it? While at a gig, I jazzed a bit and threw in a Sybil cut. The spec was impressed and said so. Hmm.. I thought.. I am not a fan of flourishing, which is handy as I’m rubbish at it! But I did think maybe there’s a bit of room for some more eye candy in my repertoire… Production quality: It’s RSVP. For those that don’t know, its top quality camera and sound work. Crediting: Continuous verbal credits throughout, plus PDF credits. Where is it performed?: In a bar setting with a few ‘real’ spectators. This is good, but not as great as some of the ‘live in Illusions’ settings we have seen from RSVP. I have not commented on Daniel’s performing style, as you should ideally try to make the effects fit your own style (and is therefore not relevant). The effects: A range of card effects, mostly based on existing plots. Most are performed with extra flourishes, but many are taught with alternate handlings to make it easier. The flourishes are (mostly) not taught. All the effects are FASDIU or nearly (just a bit of set up). All the effects can be performed in the hands by borrowing a spec’s hand as & when required. Difficulty is judged against my own personal standards and moves that I use, but may give a bit of a guide. Sequential Sandwich: “The jokers are used to find the Ace to four of a named suit one at a time, with an ending which has caught some top name magicians off guard”. OK, I’m not a fan of most sandwich tricks, but this one is quick and direct and uses 4 cards which could be signed selections. It has a nice switch at the end. A table is handy, but not essential. Difficulty – Easy. All pros and no cons. Fiddle with Biddle: “The Biddle trick taken to the next level with some great touches which make this routine a real fooler!”. This adds an extra deception to the Biddle trick which improves the magic and is not hard. Cons – there is a minor discrepancy at one stage which an alert spec may pick up on. Pros – If you can live with the discrepancy (which I think will fly by), then this really does improve a great FASDIU trick. Difficulty – Easy. I will probably try this. Kickback Bonanza: “Four queens trap a selection twice under impossible conditions, then a kickback finish that will leave their jaws on the floor. This is Dan's go to card routine” I really like this routine, or should I say, I really like parts of this routine. The Orion (?) count used to produce the queens from 4 jokers looks great, but doesn’t appear to be taught (have I missed it?). The queens are then returned to the pack and a slip-cut is performed to offload something… I know it will probably be missed / forgotten, but there are cleaner methds.. Overall this looks and appears to play very well. I am disappointed that the count is not taught (although it is fairly simple to figure out the work). I think I’ll stick to Dr D’s last trick followed by Kick Back Kicker (Lee Smith). Almost FASDIU. Difficulty – Hard. A Night with Hofsinzer : “The classic effect streamlined using a great move of Ed Marlos, direct and very strong”. An optional and fancy 4 of a kind production. A nice Hoff based effect. Almost FASDIU, all in the hands. Difficulty (without the production) Easy. I like it and may try it. Mouthy Transpo: “A two phase transposition which is direct and hard hitting, with an ending which will catch you off guard”. For some reason, I am not a fan of this one as there are easier ways of creating a similar and clearer effect. Hard. Cloaked Inversion: “An impossible 3 phase inversion routine which utilises 'the cloaked reversal', taught on disc for the first time and a complete deck reversal using only one hand!” Again, this one just did not appeal compared to other variations. Difficulty medium. Decompression: “The four aces compress into two deuces, then to a four before completely vanishing. Then we turn back time and go in reverse....This is killer!” No problem with the description here. This is a killer. Not that hard to get into FASDIU (bit of basic culling jiggery pokery). I am working on this as this is such a strong effect, also ideal for those times when the music / noise makes patter difficult. Difficulty medium (to get smooth). Taking the Plunge: “the plunger principle used in conjunction with two special assistants which locate a selection and cause two cards to change places” A plunger trick with a switch. I prefer work by Carey, or D&D’s ‘Subway’. Returning the cards to the box seems a bit unnecessary. Difficultly - Easy-medium. Four My Mates: “A sandwich effect where the selection rises visually up through the pack and then finds his three mates on the journey, friends reunited would be proud!” A sandwich switching effect. Some knacky touches required to make it look as magical as Daniel. I prefer Streamlined Sandwich. Difficulty – medium to hard. World's Fastest Threesome: “3 selected cards are found in under three seconds, in 3 different locations!” A super quick 3 card revelation. A very nice effect but perhaps too quick – don’t blink! Difficulty – medium to hard. Toolbox Section: featuring a more in-depth look at some of the sleights used. The four of a kind production, top palm and cascade control are covered to a reasonable standard Summary: The more flourishes you do during a routine, the more you have to manage your angles etc. Daniel provides easier ways to accomplish most of these effects. The teaching is nicely paced and easy to follow. A few of the routines did not appeal to me, as I felt many specs would find them hard to follow. Some were fine, but I prefer other variants, but I will definitely work decompression and Streamlined Sandwich. I will probably use Fiddle with Biddle and a Night with Hoff. That’s 2-4 routines from one DVD. To me, that’s a big hit from Daniel & RSVP. This is definitely not a DVD for a beginner (unless you are a very quick learner!). The PS: Before I picked this up, I searched for reviews. I came across a thread on T11 and saw a criticism of the material (saying it was all re-hashes of old / Carey effects - which I kind of disagreed with). Daniel responded with dignity and respect. It was probably this that nudged me to get a DVD I didn’t really ‘need’. Respect to Daniel for his chops, his work and his professional manner. |

Good review Charlie.
As you mention it's not overly flourishy,I think this maybe for me. Then again,I've always managed to rid the fannying about from other flourishy tricks that caught my eye,and gave them my own bit of *less elaborate* handling Cheers,Ray.

Hello Charlie and Everyone,
Thanks for the detailed review and we're very happy that you enjoyed the project. As anyone that knows our work, we generally steer away from flourishing DVDs, not that I don't think they are brilliant to watch, but because very few magicians doing that stuff actually perform complete routines in the situations where we like to shoot our videos. That's what drew me to Daniel as he had taken some of these moves and made them into complete routines and he was working them commercially in live venues. I think you just have to see from the reactions that he continually gets throughout the DVD, this material both fools and entertains the public. The other thing that was of interest was how Daniel has stripped some stuff back and made the routines that much more achievable. Lee Smith, Stephen Leathwaite and Chris Congreave who are all workers, commented on that very fact a lot during the shoot itself. So don't be put off thinking it's too hard!!! Thanks again everyone for your support. Best, Russ |

Xcath1: thanks for your kind words! Means a lot and yeah RSVP do always release exceptional material which is why I was so proud to be associated with them! It's not a style that will suit everyone. Which why magic is so great you can see others work through DVDs like this and even if you never perform the effects you can appreciate them, and maybe take a way a viewpoint/ slightly different mindset which you can take away and apply to your own magic.
Blindside785: yeah I aim for my material to have a slight flashy look to it as its the type of material I enjoy watching! Love the style of magicians like Helder gumaires ( probably spelt his name horrificly wrong, sorry dude ) , dani daortiz, Tyler Wilson and Rob Moreland!. Completely agree I believe it's essential to add those magical moments you speak off to elevate the effects from everyday card effect to card magic. Puggo: thanks for taking the time for such an honest review it really means a lot to me and is more constructive than people saying the material rocks! I agree with you completely you will never perform every trick from a DVD you buy, but the fact you can away 3 or 4 of the effects from this disc and perform them , that alone makes me feel like the project was worth releasing. I use fiddle with Biddle, sequential sandwich, kickback bonanza and decompression all the time during paid work etc, those effects have been used on their own as a set behind the illusions bar and the reactions were great! And beIng compared to the likes of John Carey to me is a great honour as he's a good friend and excellent card man! I knew the project would cause controversy, as flashy/visual magic always had done! Similar to the flourish movement which is slated by a lot of magicians. I try to find an even balance when I perform I rarely do Sybil's when I work, usually just variations of the frank Thompson triple cut. My style is constant changing and I'm always striving to improve which is why reviews like yours really help! As the tricks you liked we're the ones I have as my go to effects! So in the future I can aim on creating material of a similar style! I'd love to keep your thoughts coming in about handling problems, if you've taken my ideas and applied thoughts to your own work and the DVD in general, I'll always view criticism in a constructive way! And you guys have been great so far, the support for the project so far has been a little overwhelming as well if I'm honest! Kind regards Daniel chard |
