That is the same problem that the India silver canes have, you have to pull out (uncoil) the end of the cane and over bend it without the rest of the cane. This will re-cast the cane into a tighter end.
Personally, I would return it. This is a flaw in the manufacturing. Or, just put up with it.

Well, if you did not tighten or adjust the last few inches of the wrap, there is no kink apparent. I suggest you oil he whole cane and wipe the oil off the cane. If that does not solve the problem, your only alternative is cut off the end that goes wild with a tin snip scissors.
Putting platic tape on the end to look like a knob may also stop the end from unwrapping. They sell plastic tape that is 1.25 inches wide. Just put a color of your choice on the end to look like a knob. Most appearing canes have this. |

I decided to send it back; Tannen's was willing to exchange it, so I took them up on their offer. Hopefully the replacement will work out!
Thanks for the help. |

A cool story about Tannen's great customer service.
Tannen said they had more canes in stock, and that I could send it back for a replacement. I sent it back express mail, since I wanted to get the replacement back quick for an upcoming show that requires two matching canes. However they did not in fact have any in stock after all, or at least couldn't find them. But the unfurling happened to them too, and they confirmed that the problematic knob unfurling was a method problem, and not a user problem: the knob attachment was apparently different and problematic. They said they could give a refund, but I asked them to just send the cane back even though it was defective, since I needed a second cane for the show prep. They agreed to just send it back, but add the shipping I paid as future store credit. That is nice. BUT, they called back later that day. A manager had heard about the defective cane, and that I'd sent it back to no avail, so aside from sending me back the original one, Tannen's offered to also send a new cane free of charge as soon as they had one. Now THAT is excellent costumer service. They are giving a cane free of charge due to the (admittedly large) inconvenience. Although that is a great outcome that I would expect (having a functional cane), the fact that they went out of their way to make things fair has made them another long-term customer. |

I'm curious about another feature of the appearing canes from Tannen. Why haven't they been painted black with white tips like both the original Walsh cane and the later canes made by Harrakan? I suppose that would add to the expense since the finishing process could be pretty involved to prevent chipping with constant use. And as Bill points out, the original Walsh cane sold for something like $12.50, so if you factor in inflation alone, the cost today would end up being pretty high.
IIRC, I paid $60.00 for a Harrakan appearing cane several years ago. I didn't really need the Harrakan cane, because I had an original Walsh cane that was still working fine. But to me that price was acceptable because the quality of the cane was exceptional and I felt it was worth every penny--and I like to have a backup of most of the apparatus in my act. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Jblcclbj,
That is another reason I do not like doing business with Tannen's, they lie that they have items in stock, when in fact they do not. Hank Lee also does this, they just want your money, they do not care about your needs. I dislike liars! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Anatole, These are the Tannen Superior Canes said to be made by Tony Spina, who is currently ill, see another forum for that info. Spina does make or did make a deep dark blue set of canes, but they have been out of stock going on a year now. So they are selling the silver stock. -------------------------------------------------------------- Another reason to not do business with Tannen's is that you do not know what you are getting. Their policy, is, if they have a similar item in stock, they will send that item, instead of what you originally ordered. Even if the price was different, less money, they will not refund the difference. Currently, there are silver India made super thin appearing canes on the market, how would you really know that you are not getting an India cane instead of a Spina cane. Very dishonest policy! |
