I am a newbie to busking and would like to have some suggestions to what tricks to perform, current tricks in my list are:
a rope routine ambitious card card to pocket a mentalism routine (a few forced cards and numbers and a drawing dupe on the big pad) Im currently practising a cups and balls routine but not yet good enough and I want to start busking now. Maybe a misers dream at the end befor collecting money? |

There will be a lot of discussion on this topic I'm sure. It is just such a fun topic to jump on and it normally takes off in different directions.
Just for fun here is a thread that was started with that very question back when the Café was new. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 I found a dozen pages or so addressing this question plus some that addressed elements that this type of question brought to the table. It truly a shame that the search function here on the Café sucks so much that it is basically useless. Even so here are a number of threads that you might want to read. There is a doctoral level course on Busking in this section that will give you everything you need to get started. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=6 This will give you a weekend worth of reading. I came across about 100 more.

Harry, this post should qualify as a Sticky imo. How about making a new thread for it so we can all vote? Knowing you, you'll add another 20 links (in sequence and according to type) and really make it a doctoral course! LOL

You always face the dilemma "if you can produce cash from thin air, why do you need to pass the hat?"
I think you have plenty to start as it is. Read the rest of the posts here, come up with a solid *entertaining* 10 minutes, and go for it!

Once you get out there and do it, you'll get a better feel what more you can or want to do. My question is do you have a set act or routine with the material above?

Hugh, remember to keep the act to between 7 to 12 minutes. The reason I say that is I only do a rope routine in my busking show and that runs 10 to 12 minutes. If I threw in the other 2 effects that you have it would add at least 10 minutes.

@ Harry: yes please sticky post this one, as we beat this topic into the ground every spring.
Hugh, I can (and have) worked with nothing more than ring and rope. BUT I have bin busking since the '80s go out with what you have. a full day of busking will teach you more than you can ever read. plus it will make more seance to you after you hit the bricks. there is a form of hazing in this club, we don't do it to you, you do it to your self, but in the end you will learn a good deal, and that is what makes it worth it!

Pokie-Poke speaks the truth; you'll learn more about how/what/why/what not/why not in a single day on the street than you will in months of reading.
If you want a good, no-nonsense crash course on HOW to busk (not what tricks to do, that's up to you to figure out; both in terms of what you enjoy and what the crowd enjoys... HINT: IT'S WHAT THEY ENJOY THAT MATTERS.) then pick up: "To Lure With Spectacle" by Jimmy Talksalot. But just get out there, and don't pack too much stuff. God help us, I'm still working on that one.

The three tricks you do play big pack small. Cups and balls don't pack small and there are a lot of people doing cups and balls Jimmy book is a goer.

Do the tricks you're good at, but a good tip would be to get good at tricks that are MODULAR.

And the hat lines... Don't forget to work them throughout your routine so it's not a surprise asking them for money at the end.

The Café should make 2 sticky topics
1. Purely the tricks that you do on the street (specifics such as Cut and Restored Rope, Cupa and Balls, Misers Dream .etc.) 2. Advice on how to routine, attract audiences, make them pay .etc. I've just obsserved that most areas involving this topic always lead astray so it would be good to have a specific topic to stick to. |

What trick would you guys suggest to attract a crowd (not an opener but a bit of filler while you wait for the show to start)

Anything visual and instantly repeatable. The venerable TT silk vanish is always a good place to start.
