I am building a few illusions myself instead of a professional illusion builder to save some costs, as I would not be able to afford all of this. I am not building this myself, but having someone who has experience building things with wood, metal, and other materials to do it for me.
*There is no guarantee that I will actually build it! It mainly depends on the COST and difficulty of building the illusion. The first thing I hope to tackle is the Wakeling Sawing. 1) Lets start off with the plans for the illusion: http://hamiltonholtinc.stores.yahoo.net/wakelingsawing.html - Is this my best bet for the Wakeling Sawing illusion? Or are there any other plans I should consider? - Does it come with dimensions? - Does it say what type/thickness of material I need for the table so it doesn't sag? 2) Type of wood: I've done some readings on here, and heard some people using Oak for their Wakeling Sawing illusion. I was at the store today looking at some wood and other equipment, and the Oak, although nice, they are thick and heavy. There are not thinner versions available. And if there are, the pieces were too small. Although I would have never considered this before, but when I saw it, it was really beautiful looking. Simple Plywood. I have been looking for wood with nice grains and no knots. Well, I found one specific piece of plywood that is thin, yet strong and looks really really nice. It just needs to be cut up to shape. Should I consider using this? I want to stain it a bit so the grain stands out more. And I MAY stain the edges a bit darker so its like the Wellington version. http://www.wellingtonent.com/graphics/wakesaw.jpg 3) Metal dividers (blades?): Our hardware store (Home Depot) doesn't sell any large metal sheets. I found some, but they are too small to be used as the dividers or the blades. Is there a store in the Niagara-Toronto region where I can go in an see and choose the metal sheets for my blades? 4) Swords: I can get a piece of long steel, and use that as a sword. But, then id need a handle. Where can I get a handle for a sword? OR actually getting swords that are inexpensive, but where?

Hi Frymus,
You can find the ORIGINAL drawings of this illusion in the book The magic of Alan Wakeling, written by Jim Steinmeyer. Try to buy a copy of this book. It will bring you much more important information beside this illusion ! Of course plywood is ok, but it's important to use a high quality. The best quality is used for building furniture. Ask for that, maybe the shop will try to find it for you (or try to find a carpenter in your area). Keep in mind that buying a whole plate is cheaper than buying it in pieces ! For the "edges" you can buy strokes of real wood (oak or MERANTI will do very well, because this gives stained a nice "red" color). For the metal pieces: try to find a blacksmith in your area, or another location where they work with metal. Perhaps they can help you out with some "lost" material. Perhaps there is a plumber "around the corner" who can deliver the materials. In the meantime: I will would not advice you to use steel ( because it is heavy), but aluminium will do very good. |

Hi again,
I did some searching on "the big engine" = for (ply-)wood: contact McFadden in Oakville and ask them to whom they deliver in your city !! = all types of metal you can find at the metalsupermarket(.com) = looking for swords: reliks.com Much luck putting the pieces together ! |

Yes, I wouldn't to use any cheap wood.
The plywood I found looks nice and is a good quality piece. And it is the type used for furniture. But, now that I think of it, I wont be so great to use as the edges as it isn't a solid piece of wood. What wood is used in the Wakeling Sawing that Kalin & Jinger have? - Was it stained or something? I've been looking around for design ideas and I can across theirs, and theirs looks the nicest out of everyone's I've seen thus far. If I can go with the plywood, then I'll go with it. But, I'll keep looking around next week when I'm free for the summer and back in Oakville.

Frymus,
Again I say to you: buy the book. For the edges: fasten (glue) strips of real wood (oak or meranti) on the edges. A good wood-store sells strips of 2" x !/2" etc. It's combining high quality plywood with real wood. But read careful the advice of Makeupguy on your other topic: it's not JUST the illusions (equipment) |

The restraints...
Can I buy neck/ankle restraints from the 'naughty' store? There are some really nice looking ones I found. The parts are just attached with a chain, so Id just have to replace the chain with a leather strap. Hopefully it can be done. replacing the chain with leather. Unless if I have to get some other 'special' ones? These look really nice and not old/plain looking like others I've seen. So, I was wondering if I could use them. The problem I see, is the neck restraint. Its different. Im not sure how the gimmick works, so if you can, can you tell me if these are good? Plus, it would be nice to have a pair of these for later Click here to view attached image.

I've searched around on Google and on the Café, there were. Posts about this, but the links don't work anymore, nore can I find it on the sites the links were connected to.
So, where can I find a set of neck and ankle restraints? Just that beige leather type. I've been thinking about the ones I posted above, they probably won't work well with the box. May look like a werid combination.

All the builders I know have them made. You can contact an Equestrian company or try Tandy's leathercraft ( online and a few stores) and see about making them yourself.

I think you have mistaken what I said?
I mean the whole ankle/neck restraint. Not just the leather. I just see the leather materials on the sites.

No misunderstanding. All the buckles, clips and leather can be found at Tandy. You have to look a little closer. There is no special source for these items in a completed form. All builders either have them made or make them themselves.

Okay, I found EXACTLY what I wanted!
I'm happy now. But, here is something I was just thinking. I don't have the plans yet for this illusion, so I cant say, but is it possible to get additional restraints for the arms? Every sawing I've seen doesn't restrain the arms. It would be an addition to do that. Is it possible?

Yes it is possible to use additional restraints for both hands,
not for the arms, because that could be a problem when she does the "secret". But studying the whole routine of Wakeling, you can ask yourself: is it necessary. Wakeling did not do it and "solved" it by the increasing the tempo of the illusion. |

^ This guy "John Wills" is awesome. Very helpful! Has been helping me with this illusion, and my show... Just wanted to mention that
This is how my model looks like so far. It will still be modified though. I need to add legs, locking mechanism in the doors, and colour changes http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/717/sawing.jpg/

Where can I find thick 3" or so dark brown or maybe black leather straps for holding the box together?
And Leather lead? The restraints I am getting are these: http://desmond.imageshack.us/Himg829/sca......=landing So, the leather lead should be the same colour/style. The site I am getting the restraints do sell them, but they are $60-100 a piece. Kinda expensive. So, if they are $60-100 a piece for small thin ones, and I want 3" thick dark brown leather straps, that will be a lot of money! And do I need 4 large pieces, cut in half?

It has been mentioned previously, but I will mention it again. I am sure you have a Shoe Cobbler repair store in your city. Contact them and see if they will do a special project for you. They have all the equipment and expertise to make leather goods and are craftsman as well. They also have access to leather the common market place does not. They can cut, thin, dye, and assemble leather as well with buckles.
You are not going to find ready made leather products that fit your illusions, they will have to be adjusted. Even S & M equipment will have to be altered. You probably have an S & M store in your area. Our small town has one. Exit the Internet and try some leg work, it is good exercise and very educational. If you don't know of a leather craftsman look in the yellow pages of your telephone book, there should be several suggestions there under the heading leather. Then go talk to them. Now you are beginning to understand why illusion building is so expensive. If you want to go really cheap, try leather dog collars, still tie downs will have to fitted by a leather craftsman. Again check out a Tandy Leather Store, for tools and assembly parts. |

I tried Tandy. They either have what I want, but not in a large enough size (such as the buckles)
Or the leather is not the type that I want or have available. I'd go to their store, but they are far from where I live. So, unless if I'm in the area, I need to search else where. I hope they have a greater selection than what's onlin. I'm sure there are shoe repair stores. But would they sell all various types of leather including belts?

For 3" wide straps you could slit the leather yourself. Nip here on the forum could weld buckles from stainless. Having said that, I must also state that I have never seen box hold down straps for this illusion wider than 1 1/2". Why do you need 3" thus increasing you costs? If you buy a half-side of leather to slit, you will soon learn what expensive means.

Comment on your drawing...if you are actually considering using swords as you have on your design I would take a second look at what are being used.
You can use aluminum, or steel chrome plated (I like the feel!). Blair
