There are a lot of single gaffed coin routines. Does anyone know of any "multi-gaffed coin" routines? Routines that utilize a number of gaffed coins within the routine? I have all kinds of gaffed coins: s***ls, f*****g coins, m**n***c coins, sh****d coins, sl*****y s*ms, split, etc. etc. etc.
It just seems like you could come up with a KILLER routine using a bunch of these. Help!! |

I do a 2 copper 1 silver routine... but then I throw in the china change gimmick coin. so I have the silver in one hand, the two coppers in the other. and the silver chances to a chinese coin and two copper turn to silver. then I dump the chinese coin in the other hand... retaining the s***l... and I grab the two real coppers out of my pocket as I ditch my s***l.
and even though I haven't actually performed this next part yet... I want to go into a scotch and soda where I chhange the centavo into a chinese coin inside of a normal drinking glass. because I end clean at the end of my 2 copper 1 silver 1 chinese routine with 4 examinable coins. I can just put those 4 away, bring out a glass... then bring out my scotch and soda coins... hopefully they'll assume it's just the same two coins they examined 20 seconds ago... then I tell them I'll change one of them inside a glass, so that I wont be using any slight of hand. the centavo changes into a chinese coin, and then they can examine both right after. so this little routine uses 3 gaff sets I guess. the routine builds on itself because the 2 copper 1 silver trick is good on its own... but when you throw in the china change... it really catches people by surprise. plus, the change that you get with a the china change gimmick I think is stronger than what you get doing a copper, silver, brass routine. and the scotch and soda in a glass is just such an impossible change... my hope is that people will really have no idea how these coins are changing. because with 2 copper 1 silver, people might suspect that some trick coins are in use, which is why you're always going back and forth to your pocket... but since the scotch and soda trick is examinable right after, they'll be at a loss as to how these coin changes could be possible. another thing I could do at the very end when they're examining the US half after the scotch and soda change is to do a coin switch for my cigarette through coin. I can even make a joke about there being a hole in the middle as the false explanation. I can say "i bet you're wondering how I changed the centavo into a coin with a hole in it... well... here's how I did it... if you just rub the centre of the coin, you can melt a hole in it." also... my hope is to start this routine using non-gaffed coins for a first effect that end with me having 2 copper and 1 silver coin to be examined. I think that starting with a non-gaffed effect will make these gimmicks more powerful since at first they still might be on the lookout for slight of hand. |

The combination of a H**ked Coin and Exp S**el called a "Birch Stack" from a 1932 manuscript is a very powerful tool. Naturally, the use of a Magnetic H**k expands these possibilities.

Each time I see a longer - maybe the better word is 'multi-phase'? - coin routine, I get bored. Don't know why.

I think people lose interest when you mix in too much and make it all a bit too long, or perhaps they are just courteously confused as they continue to watch you. Personally, I think short coin routines work better as to spec's attention. While I like and appreciate the old classic, Cylinders & Coins, I wouldn't do it for most people, just too long an effect IMHO. I'm just sayin'.

I think it's wise to find your style.
I could watch Slydini all day doing his fairly long coin routines. Lavand has a slow romantic methodical approach---he could do any of his routines quickly in half the time but chooses not to. Al Schneider does several short routines in a row. His complete "act" is 13 minutes long. Dr. Sawa loves to use story-based patter which draws out his presentation but keeps you engaged and fascinated. Ponta The Smith hits you with flourishes and mini effects with a minimal amount of time. They are all amazing in their own way. Then you have Gallo, Roth and Rubinstein. These guys can do ANTHING any way they want to. I remember HOPING to see Rubinstein do a LONG routine and on one of his DVDs he linked three together. It was so sweet. There is an art and opinion of what "should" be long or short. Master Payne broke an assumption with his superlative Coin Through Bottle routine. One of the best magic presentations you will EVER see. That's what keeps this art so interesting.

Your gig is in 15 minutes...you are caught in the rain and are soaking wet by the time you get to your gig, and you hear the announcer call your name! YOU'RE ON! Your stage show is 20 minutes long. What are you going to do? Can you keep them entertained? Will they think they got their money's worth? That is the test of a true performer. That, by the way is a paraphrasing from the book, Tales Of Enchantment: The Art Of Magic by Walt Anthony. http://www.leapinglizardsmagic.com/tales_of_enchantment.htm I think the idea is BE ENTERTAINING first! Be a likeable, charismatic performer! The "props" and routine are secondary. Best advice I can give... Doug |

I especially like Doug's "what if" scenario regarding 20 minutes until show time and your pants are down so to speak without any arsenal. I'll never forget when I found myself in this exact situation once while at an out of town corporate event without any magic. My peers found out I was a part-time magician, and thought it would be amusing to surprise me by signing me up for a talent competition on the last night while I was sitting in the audience waiting to watch the show. I went back stage with less than 30 minutes before show time and devised a killer comedy act involving nothing more than 2 ropes, a bag, and a whole lot of crowd participation and corny puns. I rummaged the cast room and found a bra, scarf, and Mannequin head to put in the bag. The routine involved tying the rope around a female volunteers neck, getting 2 other volunteers to hold the ends of the rope on both sides, and a 4th volunteer to hold the bag in front just to "keep things clean" in case anything falls when they pull on the ropes ends. I try to calm down the helpless woman with her neck on the line (literally) by letting her know that there is no need to worry since I've always come out a-head on the couple occasions I had the chance to try this risky trick out... and that I'm determined to "pull it off" tonight. Of course I act surprised when I spot the head inside the bag (as if it's from a prior performance) and idiotically pretend to "misdirect" my audience and volunteers while not-so-subtly grabbing it from the bag and throwing it off the stage before anyone notices. I just remember drawing out the finale as long as possible with a ton of lame jokes that actually somehow worked on my inebriated crowd. By the time the rope gets pulled through her neck revealing her bra, my goal was to ensure that the audience really wouldn't care much because they were already having so much fun with the whole scenario. As it turns out, I got the final laugh when I actually won the competition and walked off with the prize money! I guess it sometimes pays off when you don't have time to over prepare or get butterflies before a performance.

Well Doug - I think I'd have to start tap dancing or something! The problem I see is that a stage show requires larger, more visible props than just coins and cards. If all your props are gone there's not really that much you can do impromptu from the stage, that is if you want your audience to actually see what you are doing!
Thanks! Jim |

Triception uses a [/ an exp [ and a mag*&^ic coin. plus a mag holdout and a magnetic ditch device.
overall, I believe you will be hard pressed to find or even do a routine with a mutitude of gaffed coins in the mix that a) you can remember and pull off gracefully and b) the spectator could follow or even appriciate the work you just put in for him/her. Gaffs, wether they be coins or cards are like salt and pepper at dinnertime, a little bit goes a long way and too much can spoil the taste. and believe me when I say, I have more gaffs than most working magicians would ever own, but I use them sparingly and after a couple of clean effects a gaffed effect thrown in will fulfill its most potential. I would never open with a 3 1/2 of clubs but after three or four solid routines - it kills. Just as if you are using a shell inn every effect you do, they will eventually get suspicious. and how is it that ever time yo close and open your hand it changes from copper to silver or vica versa. They are so much more impressive when used sparingly. Now, I understand full well what the cost of all these great gaffs is. Mine are all top dollar either in Morgan Dollar or Walking Liberty Halves. I as much as anyone want to use every one, every time and get my monies worth, but I have found through the years. if you leave them wanting - they will return. As in hireing you again, following you to places you work and you will usually have a little something held back to amaze them once again.
