Would anyone be able to point me towards a six-foot balloon performer in the San Diego area? It's not a listing option on BHQ. :8>) I'm looking for someone who might be willing to help me learn this. (Yes I have Larry's book.)

There are definitely a few in California. Of course the one that pops into the head first would be Buster Balloon. If you are wiling to pay for his time he may be interested in helping you out.

I did think of him, of course. But he's up north of where I'm looking at. Another time, and I'd drive -- and pay!! -- the extra without hesitation.

How about the 'Skype' option? That may open up other avenues....

Skype isn't an option for me. My old laptop has to have help finding the internet! Plus the personal touch - as well as the safety aspect - are worth the drive.

Ed - there is really not much to it. If you follow Larry's book, it is just a mater of trial and error. You can use a shop vac to inflate the balloon. Inflate it several times (to stretch the balloon) before trying to enter it. Make sure you have someone else there with a cutting instrument for safety. Do not overinflate the balloon and let a bit of air out prior to entering. Make sure your balloon is on a padded mat. You may go through several balloons at first. Good luck.

By the way, if you choose to use a shop vac, use a brand new one and only use it for inflating balloons. A small one works fine. It is slower than a leaf blower, but I find the inflating of it creates excitement and anticipation.

I've got my balloons and leaf blower on the way!! I'm excited to try this.
Charlie: You mention inflating the balloon several times to stretch it. Is this better than the dryer method? (Heck - in a Yuma summer, I'll just put it in the car for five minutes!!) I had also wondered about inflating it and using it as advertising (like walking through a crowded area holding up the inflated balloon with something like "Follow me for great laughs and fun!!" written on it), then deflating it and reusing it to go into the routine. Ed - I know there is a recommendation of warming the balloon first, but I have never done that (it sounds like a good suggestion for at first though). It is most important to have a foam mat (I use a thin one) underneath the balloon.
I have never used it for promotion for my event, but I realy like your idea. Especially for working festivals. |

Where did you get your mat? How big is it? I was thinking of just a large colorful blanket.

After more than 100 balloons of doing this. One tip I will share with you is NEVER wear Hair Gel when you perform it.

I think I got it at Walmart. It rolls pretty tight and is about 4' X 6'. I think it is used as an exercise mat. A blanket may not be suitable for all working environments. Once you start performing this, you realize just how many small pebbles there are in this world - both indoor and out.

Lou:
What's the big deal about the hair gel? Is it sharp spikes? Or a chemical reaction? |

Also interested in the gel thing as I usually make my hair spike in the middle which does require a fair bit of product. I am also new in this and hope to be doing the jumbo balloon by the winter.

The hair gel tends to melt the latex on the neck of the balloon. It won't pop yet. But when the balloon reaches your knee, chances are high the balloon will pop.
I'm now sporting short hair just to perform this. Right now, my failure is 2 out of 10 balloons. Some of these balloons are not made well.

That's a lot of money at $25 per balloon... Ouch!! I tend to use a lot of gel also. So either short hair, wild hair, or find a reason to wear some kind of cap (like Larry Moss). I just got my first jumbos yesterday - waiting for my leaf blower. Glad I found out about this. Thanks Lou!! Ed |

Another tip: When you cut the lip of the balloon, do not dispose of it. You can use it to practice simulating getting in and out of the balloon.
There are so many things not mentioned in Larry Moss book. It is not complete. If you notice in his one and only Youtube video, his balloon popped too early. I am still on the road to perfecting this. Perhaps a hundred more performances.
