Hey everybody:
I've been playing around with lighting a bit of flash paper and grabbing a sponge ball from the flash. I was wondering, how to you all introduce the paper? Do you pretend to rip it off a napkin? do you just bring out the paper? Also, sometimes the flashpaper seems to float down before burning out, I guess you have to watch your distance carefully as to not burn the customers.... K

The best way to introduce the flash paper is to hold it up, point to it and say, "Hello everyone, this is the flash paper." Then point to the audience, look at the flash paper and say, "Hello flashpaper, this is the audience."
Okay, I'm joking. I don't think you need to introduce it at all. Just take it out of your pocket and do your stuff.

Hahahaha, thanks Bill!
I'm a good example of a magician over-thinking his props I suppose... I do like your gag though. I also just realized on Eugene Burgers Magical Voyages DVD set (http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.php?productid=5132) he has an interesting method of disguising flash paper as cigarette papers, I'm sure that's been around for a while. But something about the cigarette papers, the flame, they go together and seem less out of the blue. Perhaps it's not necessary to make a flashy appearance of the first spongeball however I'm a fire dancer and I love me some flame.

If you were working a really rough crowd, you could bring out a roll of toilet paper, tear off a square and....Never mind!

I like the second suggestion...!
Jarle Leirpoll had a gag in his lecture notes for Toilet Paper to Egg in which you say you could have used recycled toilet paper, but then you would get a brown egg... I agree with what Bill said originally - you should not really have to justify it or introduce it (though that intro gag was funny too!). Tearing the paper off of a paper napkin can lend a comical and/or free-flowing touch, (it would be better suited if you were going to wrap something up inside the flash paper to execute a change/vanish/etc.) though hardly necessary. Indeed, the sponges themselves (especially the super soft variety) can be compressed quite tight, and will spring open in a flash (no pun intended) when released quickly. |

I saw Mike Caveny do a miracle with toilet paper once.

One of Don Alan's books, can't remember if it was Pretty Sneaky or Close Up Time, uses sponge balls and flash paper, you might consider it. Or you could always introduce it as the worlds worst cigarette paper.
Yes I know another poor joke.

@Frank Tougas: Actually, that joke about the worst cigarette paper in the world is actually quite funny when you think about it! There are many different comic possibilities with that line...
