Hey guys,
I wanted to share my latest project with you guys. In the past I have built a subtrunk and zig zag so I wanted to tackle something a little different so I am going to build a Modern Art. Here goes so please be gentle! I modified the original plans a bit. I wanted to fit myself in it instead of an assistant. I am pretty big, so modifying the plans took a while to figure out. Here are my first couple pictures. Right now it is in 3 pieces. Photo 1: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47083932@N0......tostream Photo 2: http://www.flickr.com/photos/47083932@N0......tostream

Looks great Wayne! Keep us updated for sure. It's always inspiring to see what others are doing to problem solve some of the little pieces here and there on these illusion builds!

Yes my plans came from Jim Steinmeyer's book. I wanted to make sure I had it before started building. The book is good but the plans are just OK. Just like most of Osborne's plans, there is A LOT of problem solving to do. The hard part (for me) was reworking all the measurements to fit me, a 6 ft, 215 lbs man. The original plans are for a very small woman so it took some work to get it where I needed it to be. I will give you guys updates as I go. I should have it all put together tonight, then I will work on the "table" and slide.
As far as the paint scheme, I am not a huge fan of the current modern art paint job. I just think it has been seen a lot. Any ideas from you guys? The other pictures are mine but the only other build is the zig zag and I didn't post a picture of it with the finished coat on it. I did a lot more sanding and painting since the last picture was posted.

OK, I connected the bottom pieces, sanded the top piece, put the base on and put the first coat of black on the inside. Lots of work to go.

Looks great! I love how you half-rounded the side doors... It will look great in the end to break up all of the straight lines of this illusion. Keep us posted! I'm looking to start my Modern Art build very soon! Do you plan to paint yours of cover it in Formica?

Thanks Bryan. I am planning on painting it. A friend of mine just built one and he used wall paper (for the table part) and put lacquer over it and it looks really good. I was surprised that it turned out that well. But I plan on painting mine. My plan right now is to paint the sides, back and trim dark blue. Then the inner face of the box will be a lighter blue and I think the figure should be yellow. I think the table should be a silver or grey marbled look. I don't care for the original graphics so I plan on making my own. Thought?

Here is an update. I am really close to getting finished with the build. The table and track were a little harder than I thought it would be. All I really have left as far as building is the inside of the table, the rest is just the finishing touches.

Is that 3/8 inch plywood? Does it break down? Nice work.

Hi James,
It is actually 1/2 inch birch so it will have a good looking smooth finish when it is done. The 3/8 inch just seemed a bit flimsy for me. I wanted it to hold me and I am bigger. It is pretty sturdy and feels like a piece of furniture. It does break down. One modification, I put arm holes in the side so I can move it myself. I will put a spandex frame on the inside.

Well, it is completely built! Now all I have to do is finish painting it and add some fabric in a couple places and it is ready to go. Here are some pictures.

Almost done! Paint is finished. I just need to lacquer it, add knobs, metal trim on the base and the cloth on the inside. I went with a nontraditional paint job. I chose a design sort of like one that I saw Chance Wolf do a long time ago. I just sort of free-handed it. I know, some people will hate the artwork but different strokes I guess. I love the color combination though.

The dark blue border/trim should be black (look at Steinmeyer's original design)this way the boxes look more seperated when they are apart.
This is a very important detail that should not be overlooked!!! |

I followed Steinmeyer's plans. There is a black separation between the boxes that is hard to see in the camera because of the angle. The gap is either .5 or.75 inches (can't remember) and 1.5 inches deep per the plans. I think they look pretty separated.

Looks good. Nice work. Does it fit in one case? If so, how big and how heavy?
