What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

As long as Owen Wilson isn't in the role it should be fine. The only native actor in the right age group who people know I can't see doing a comedic role. Besides Depp is the man right now.

Recall that the legendary Iron Eyes Cody was actually a full-blooded Sicilian. (Remember his "Crying Indian" public service ad back in the 70's where you see the tear on his cheek after litter flies from a passing car and lands at his feet?)
Given that Iron Eyes was one of the best remembered "Indian" actors, I don't see the problem with Depp playing Tonto. (Depp, BTW, claims that his great grandmother was Cherokee or Creek.) |

I think Jay Silverheels himself was probably more remembered. Other than that commercial I don't think most people can name much that Iron Eyes Cody ever did. Will Samson also had nice roles in some very famous movies. I'm not sure Iron Eyes is even the best known non-native to portray an indian. Daniel Boone was a huge TV show with Ed Ames as the lead indian character. |

John Ford was a big early proponent of casting real Indians.
I must say though, that one of the funniest things I've ever seen was the Indians played by Japanese actors in "Cannibal: The Musical." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEjpKBDMk8I

I don't expect that anyone outside of a few Native Americans will see any problem with Johnny Depp portraying an indian, and basing his look on a a painting by a non-native artist who makes no pretense of being historically accurate in his paintings. Indians aren't afforded the level of respect that most other ethnic groups are in Hollywood movies. That's just the way it is and everyone knows it. |

My dad's uncle's cousin's pet rock was full-blooded Omajeebus. That's why I'm allowed to grow my hair out. It's disrespectful for anyone else to do it though.

Iron Eyes was a bit more famous than you may recall:
Quote:
Cody began his acting career at age twelve. He worked in film and TV until the time of his death. From his time in Hollywood, Tony Cody claimed Cherokee-Cree ancestry. He lived his life as if he were of indigenous Native American descent, both on and off the screen, and strongly supported American Indian causes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Eyes_Cody Personally, I am part Fukawi. |

When I lived near the Four Corners, I was told that the film version of "Cheyenne Autumn" (1964) used Navajo extras to portray the Tsitsistas (Cheyenne). The Tsitsista leaders were portrayed by Ricardo Montalban, Sal Mineo, and Gilbert Roland! Navajos speak an Athabaskan language, similar to Apache, while the Tsitsistas speak an Algonquian language. But no matter. I guess it sounded authentic enough. Except that according to what I was told, the Navajo dialogue consisted of off color jokes and insults! Apparently Navajo audiences found the film uproariously funny. I haven't seen the film since I learned some Navajo, so I can't vouch for that, but it is an interesting sidelight to this discussion.
