Well I just bought a used Temple of Benares illusion, and I'm excited to start using it. I have what I think will be an unique way to present it as an opener to my act. While Indian music is playing, I'd blow up a very LARGE balloon. I'd open up the doors and I'd put the balloon into the Temple. Then I'd thrust the swords into the Temple and open the doors to show the swords and that the balloon is no longer there. Then I'd take out the swords and out of the Temple my assistant would appear.
What does everyone think about this? |

It sounds pretty good. my only problem is it might take some of the mystic away from the illusion. what makes the temple of benares so cool is that it is a sword box, a vanish and an appearance all in one. I could be wrong as, it is only my opinion.

I'm with Sap on this one. You've just turned your Temple into a Doll House.

"For my first effect, a GRAND illusion! Here's a little box, normally my assistant would get in and I would put all kinds of swords though it! BUT ...it would seem she did not get here in time for the show. Hmmm... I know...why don't I use this balloon to show you what it WOULD have looked like! (Balloon blown up and put in Temple, a couple of swords put in and then the balloon pops. SURPRISE!) Oh well, maybe it's a good thing I did not put my assistant in it!!!! Swords out, (maybe Temple shakes a little, act surprised), tops open and up pops your assistant (and as the ads would say "totally filling the tiny space" LOL)
Just a thought! B

Blackstone Jr. was using Owen's "Temple of Buddha", this is a really nice model where the Buddha finally vanishes and the girl is there, and the sides are let down.
Richiardi Jr. also used a small dog with the "Temple of Benares", the dog would run across the stage and into the Temple, swords put through and removed, girl now there. Blair

A rip-off??
Just a little background on this illusion to keep this educational....LOL The "Temple of Benares" was originally called the "Temple of Angee" and was performed starting in 1935 by it's creator, Jack Gwynne, magician and illusionist. The effect was "borrowed" by Percy Abbott (of Abbott's) and was put on sale, through them, around 1941. This was done without the permission, or to the knowledge, of Jack. Blair

For several seasons we produced a rabbit. Put him in the temple, put the swords in, opened the front and he was gone. No big mystery as he was a small Netherland Dwarf in the temple. Then we removed the swords and my female assistant popped out. We had great by play with the swords and my male assistant who handed me the swords and took them from me as they were removed. Always got a great reaction. We re-produced the rabbit later. I think it was a Chalet temple.

Nanci,
You could always build one with a "look" that may be more appropriate to your act. Temples are not hard to build. Especialy if you do an Abbott's design. (They have plans.) Paul O. also has a good set of plans. Even if you do a "young, hip, act" you could always introduce it with "look what an old magician left to me, it's supposed to.....hey, let's try it with this balloon." then go into the above routine. Finally producing the assistnat who looks as surprised as you, that she was in there! "Hey, it does work!!" If you have a pure comedy act the girl produced could be wearing a "cleaning, lady type outfit" and carrying a large feather duster. She was just in there dusting around "this old Temple" B (P.S. Thanks for the kind words.)

I was never thrilled with the regular opener with the assistant getting into the temple, and then the magician putting the swords into it, then opening the doors, showing the swords, and then closing the doors and then having the assistant reappear.
I also thought putting a stuffed animal, or Buddha, and then having it disappear, didn't make much sense to me either. That is why I thought of the large balloon. BUT, having the balloon POP, makes everyone think even more about the danger of the swords being thrust into it. Then having my assistant then appear out of it is a Killer end to this great illusion. I plan to use this illusion and routine on the 18th. and the 23rd. It's funny how life is. 4 weeks ago I bought 72 large balloons that can be blown up to over 24 inches, not even having any idea what I would use them for. I wasn't even thinking about The Temple of Benares Illusion. Then while searching E-bay, which is something I have not done for months, I come across a used, Temple of Benares, in great shape, at a too good to pass up price. Also to go along with how odd this whole thing turned out to be, is the fact that I purchased the Osborne plans for the Temple a year ago but never built it. Then of course, Blair contributing his great idea. I guess some things are meant to be. |

I just wanted to let you know that my good friend Dick Gustafson does this with a balloon in his Temple of Benares and has done it for years! I'm not sure if he originated it or not but you may want to check with him before doing it. Pm me for his info in interested.

Mad Jack, You have got to be kidding me. Not to be disrespectful to Dick Gustafson, whom I do not know, and I have never seen him perform The Temple of Benares, and who may or may not have originated sticking a balloon in The Temple.
Oh wait, especially an illusion that has been around since 1935. Let me see, you want me to ask him permission to do this? Maybe, I should ask every magician in the world if they have ever done this, before I do. Believe me, I'm not copying his routine because I have never seen his routine. |

Years ago, Shawn Farquhar told me about using a balloon in a Temple of Benares, as well. So, when I read the idea on this thread, I thought, "This is not a new idea."
I sent a note to Blair about that, when this thread was first started 4 days ago. - Donald P.S. If anyone does not know who Dick Gastafson is, he wrote a classic book titled, "Professional Illusion Building for the Home Craftsman." It is a part of my illusion library, and I'd recommend it to others. I'm not saying that the balloon idea is in the book. But I'm saying that lots of illusion builders (even performers who also build their own) know his name, even if they haven't seen him perform.

This is my point exactly. If you read my posts and Blair's, whom I do not know, you can see how this idea developed on this forum.
One might say; "Great minds think alike." With as long as this illusion has been around, I doubt if there is anything that hasn't been done by someone, somewhere. To please everyone, I promise to use an assistant that has never been used before for this trick. |

And change the balloon color! Better yet, use a small bouquet of balloons, so there are several pops from inside the Temple.
