Looking for experienced magicians to busk for hat at the Columbus Arts Fest, June 1, 2 & 3, 2012. Family-rated magic only. PM if interested with name, phone number and day or days and times available. This is sanctioned and an unusual opportunity, although only a few spots open.

This sounds interesting....
What would not be considered family-rated magic? I'm sure geek magic (i.e. cutting, slicing, piercing, nail through nose ) is in this list? I do a rope through body and rope through neck...these? Just wondering what folks that run the bigger fest consider to be "family-rated" and what crosses the line. Except for the obvious stuff...

Good question. I don't know what you consider "obvious" but likely that would encompass it. It would include anything sexual, any profanity, especially the big "ef", fire, anything with knives, guns, blood, dismemberment, cigarette magic, and the like.
Rope thru neck would probably be OK, although I removed it from my family magic after complaints from parents. I know, with what kids see on TV you would think almost anything would be permitted, but it is a weird world... Jim

Thanks for your response Jim.
I often wonder this at times, but I have yet to receive any complaints...I guess it could be the way I present it or that I have not done that many shows. Yet, sometimes, I wonder....

I took out any kind of smoking trick from my show a while back.
I took all the smoking stuff out at the behest of a few theme parks I had worked. In particularly Disney said cigarettes were a no go. I've always tried to keep my show family friendly in light of Disney standards. I know I could get away with more in some of the other venues where I perform, but choose not too. My thoughts have always been, if you have a show that can work for Disney you can perform just about anywhere. I guess the smoke ban came about through the advent of the whole political correctness thing. People in the U.S. really have a thing against anything having to do with cigarettes. I never found it to be a problem in Asia or Western Europe. Oh and I was a smoker of all things. (Just quit a few months ago) So I always had cigarettes around. So I'm definitely not one of those anti smoking crusaders... Just my 2 cents |

Currently, they are trying to force all of the movie studios into agreeing that there will be NO smoking in any family-oriented films. In addition, smoking is likely prohibited at the Arts Fest. I don't necessarily agree with it, but it has taken about 5 years to get this gig and it is just not worth the risk to lose it. Jim

I decided to take "Ropes Through The Neck" out of my act that day. We have a lot more influence on kids than we think we do.

I agree, Ed. There is just no good reason to take such a risk, as at any family-type event you never know who is watching. I find I don't miss most of the things as there is so much to choose from. I did kind of hate to put away the needle swallow, though...
