What is the best looking or unique tarot deck?
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "

I don't think there is a best per say as everyone has their own opinion about what looks good to them. Are you looking for ma***d or unma***d? I personally like the carnie tarot for that special something. As for normal, I own the aleister Crowley deck in which I really like the look and feel of them. I also own a smaller deck known as the seceret tarot deck which I must admit, they will not be for everyone but they are probably one of my faveourit decks I own as I do own a few more as well.

Depends on what style or feel you are looking for.
For psychedelic zennish cards, take a look at the Osho Zen Tarot. If you want more traditional archetypes, I really like Golden Tarot by Kat Black. There are thousands out there to choose from and I would say most people familiar with the Tarot would suggest you choose one that you feel reaching out to you. |

I prefer a traditional pack (Rider-Waite, Marseille, etc.) that is well worn and aged. I don't like packs that look like they just came off the shelf in the New Age section of Barnes and Noble.

I guess I was thinking like chess sets. The feel is not as important as the art work. I do appreciate everyone's input.

I like Lo Scarabeo decks. I've used Crowley's deck since the beginning of time but, like Crowley, it is no longer appealing. I really like the new Carny deck and would use it without the trickery. Rider Waite is boring. Check out the Lo Scarabeo site
http://www.loscarabeo.com/ Disregard the new age crap, look for Tarot de Marseille or similar.

I think most of Loscarabeo would be considered new age. For something a little different, a cross between traditional and Thoth, take a look at the Sun and the Moon. Some may not like the cartoonish images but I have been able to connect with it and have found that many sitters do as well. I would say though that it is probably better for short party readings than in depth individual ones but that's why we have multiple decks at our disposal, right.

For a unique deck, take a look at The Housewive's Tarot. It will give you an entirely different aspect to the sitter, and a new 'language', phrases etc., to use. It is very much compatible to lives of the 20's - 30's crowd. Nothing spooky about it, but it's a great learning deck applicable to anyone at any level. If you ever get tired of the same old stories, you might take a look at this one, I've enjoyed it.
But for me, for reading: Waite deck with the faces hidden from the querant. They need to listen to me, not look at the pictures. But...that was then.

While I'm not a "reader", that is I don't make money off doing readings for show, I have a decent collection of decks laying about. Always been into tarot/ the occult. My absolute favorite deck is Crowely's Thoth Deck. The artwork by Lady Frieda Harris is phenomenal. I'm also a fan of Robert Wangs The Golden Dawn deck, as well as the black and white deck available from Builders of the Adytum. (Which, if you're serious about tarot check out BOTA and paul foster case)

I've tried every kind of deck and for readings always settle on the Rider Waite. I did have the "Cosmic Tarot" - Joe Riding supplied it with his pyshic course back in the day and I used that for many years however some of the pictures are unsettlingly like famous people and I started to find it more and more distracting.

I'm with Bob on this one. Rider Waite. But to be honest you need one you feel comfortable with - I've used Rider Waite for so long I don't see the point in changing.
Some of the new ones leave me cold. |

Personally I like the Rider Waite but do also have the Tarot de Marseille by Fournier which was part of the Black Hart Tarot reading package. I would not use the latter though as I feel it looks rather cheap. The other deck I use frequently (although not a tarot deck) is the Deck of Shadows and this my favourite deck for everyday use and as a rule I always carry one in my pocket.

Another option is the wide number of Oracle Decks - such as the various ones put out by Doreen Virtue. The advantage of these is that they were designed to avoid the negative scary cards so sitters don't get stressed out by the possible negative vibes from the images. Of course that could be viewed as a disadvantage as well as these cards do serve a purpose. Some of the decks are beautiful - I got the Ascended Masters deck for Christmas and I really like it although I've yet to use it in readings.

I am in the process of aging an extra Rider-Waite deck that I had sitting around. I now understand completly why Outlaw produces only the Major Arcana cards in the sets that they sell. It is a lot of work to age each card (this project of aging an entire deck may take more than a month of work for me). I agree with Mr Cassidy's assesment that the cards just shouldn't look all clean, new, and shiney.
