My primary is the Rohrig deck. I have certain criteria that a deck has to meet to be acceptable for my readings.
Of course, if I really like a deck, I can modify it to fit my needs. Tony |

I really like the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (let's give the artist a little credit here!) because of the layers of meaning and interpretation AND, more importantly, it's a deck that sitters recognize and are familiar with. It's what people think of when they think of tarot.
I use the "Radiant Rider-Waite tarot deck" (that's the official name, so I can't add Smith in there ...even though it should be in there) because it is the familiar deck but with bright vibrant colors. I keep it in a velvet pouch; which just happens to be a change bag. I also do readings with a regular deck of cards; either for my Vitruvian square readings or stand alone readings. They also are can be a useful and interesting addition to bone casting, but usually that would end up being a really long reading. I use a regular bicycle deck, but an old fashioned art deck or a bacarat deck would probably be more dramatic.

Tony,
What criteria does a deck need to meet for you to find it acceptable for readings? |

Without sounding too much like the hippy that I can be, the best deck (for readings) is the one that you find yourself drawn too and are comfortable with. I've got too many decks to count, I bought some because I loved the art work and some because they were unique and interesting in somewa. But of all these decks, there's only one that I'll ever use for readings and that's a rather plain looking deck that I got when I was about 14 in a 'How to Read the Tarot' set. It's not a particulary pretty deck and isn't really full of symbolism but it's the deck that know inside out, it's deck that I feel most in tune with.

They do have images. Not as elaborate as the Majors, but smaller images.

Much more seriously, there's an excellent collection of very varied decks HERE, with lots of pictures. Hopefully you will find something that suits you.

I'm still looking for just the deck. Let me off some different perimeters. While I know this is a personal preference, there are chess sets that the pieces are out of this world. I'm looking for that kind of tarot cards.
Thanks Steve

Have you really been searching for one? If you have, and haven't found one yet, you might choose a different oracle. Maybe numerology, runes or bones.
The earlier advice about finding a deck that speaks to you is the best. Rider Waite is good became the symbolism is pretty clear. I prefer the Robin Wood deck. Good luck with your search. Shad |

I only use Marseille style decks - the Jean Dodal from 1701, in particular. The images are so ingrained in the popular consciousness, it's possible to only use Majors, which I frequently do.

Have a look at the Sheridan Douglas pack: http://www.sheridandouglas.co.uk/gallery.htm
I have the original 1970s version - thick, laminated cards which are now too sticky to be used. According to the reviews the new version is much better. I can recommend Alfred Douglas's accompanying book too. Barry |

Just head down to outlaw and get yourself a Carnie Tarot Deck.
I work in a new age bookstore doing readings. EVERY tarot reader asks where I got mine and where can they get one. Of course one is 80 years old and handed down from teacher to student, so no I don't know where they can get one Other readers refuse to touch the cards as they say it has too much energy, or the vibrations are too high. Need I say more? Ps they are marked.

Whilst not technically a Tarot Deck, I currently have a deck on Kickstarter that does the same job as a tarot deck, is far more inclusive, and doesn't have some of the fear that is sometimes attached to Tarot by audiences. It also has countless magic uses. If you are interested in this sort of thing I'd love you to check it out. It is over here: http://kck.st/1RJgfeJ

Glad to see Machina suggested the Carnie tarot deck. Outlaw makes a set just of the majors, as well as a full set (called the Elite Carnie). These turn heads.

Looking for a tarot deck that fits these qualifications:
--Doesn't look new-agey --Classical feel --Use coins instead of pentacles (pentacles spook some people) --doesn't look too contemporary in layout of card (I like aged looks) --RW tradition of interpretation One of these days, I will find it.
