It's terrific that you still have enough sense of wonder to accept what Derren is telling you. Very few magicians can still think as lay people. Learn from this and never forget how you feel no matter what methods you may discover as you get further into magic. >I remember one of his programmes where he asked a >poker player to think of any random card and was >able to guess which one just by the man >reciting "ace, 2, 3, 4, 5...". Yes, but how was the card "randomly" selected? I can't remember the exact details but it wasn't as clean as you're presenting it. >And just by looking at the faces of Derren and the >volunteer (James?), I do not believe this was a set->up. I didn't see the show but why would he resort to doing it for real when he has what must be one of the most creative magic/mentalism ideas team under his wing? Regards, David. |

I thought it was rubbish!
Sorry to those who liked it I thought it was almost as boring as David Blaine in a box. If this is the future of magic, I quit!

Bye jones, it was nice having you with us for a while.
LOL, yes derrens the real thing, so am I! Now send me all your money and I will send you a psychic candle to prevent negative psychic thoughts. I do the same A,2,3,4,5 card trick, and people say its a trick. Derren does it and they think its real. Looks as if I need to sell out too. |

Okay, it was a joke before anyone takes me seriously (how could anyone take *me* seriously) Excellent showmanship. Period. |

Lol bartlewizard, I'm not saying I believe he is psychic, I'm saying I believe he is excellent at knowing how the human mind works and how he utilises that in his act.
I just got the feeling that some people posting here believe it was all a set-up, which they are entitled to believe, so I wanted to say that I think he is able to read peoples' body language etc. in order to predict what will happen/what they will do etc. |

I'm inclined to agree - to a certain extent. However good at reading peoples' body language Derren is, do you really think he's confident enough to play Russian Roulette using these 'skills' alone? More to the point, do you think Channel 4 would show the event if there was ANY element of doubt involved? Of course not! This means that the result was guaranteed to be one of success long before filming started, and I don't believe for one moment that Channel 4 would have placed their faith solely in Derren's 'mind reading' abilities.
That's not to say that I didn't watch and thoroughly enjoy the programme. I was determined not to be 'on edge' at all during the stunt (as I was certain that he would survive, one way or another) - having said that, I was on the edge of my seat during the finale! It was some of the best TV I've ever seen! |

I don't think anyone here really thinks it was a set-up in terms of using a stooge but I think most of us who have been around long enough appreciate Derren's spiel for what it is - a spiel.
What really gets my goat is why he thinks being a "body language expert" is a better lie than claiming to be psychic to the extent he's happy to expose effects on Channel 5. Regards, David. |

So was the "mistake" of firing the gun without bullet at the target something to cement the idea that this is for real?

About the element of danger - wasn't there a 9 or 10 second time delay just in case he "messed up"?

The mistake was almost certainly that rare old thing called Showmanship - but I didn't see it so don't really know.
As for the time delay - well what I read was that it was there if Derren decided not to go ahead. The screen would blank and an announcer would explain what had happened. Derren himself said he wouldn't do it unless he was totally sure, and that's probably the only truthful thing he's likely to have said about the matter! Regards David. |

Derren presents to me something rare. Even though I sat and watched the programme thinking (knowing?) "it's just a trick", boy was my heart pumping during his minute silence.
The atmosphere conjured up by the production was incredible. At the end of the day you had Derren sat at a table, and a bloke sat behind him. No audience. No applause. No laughter, shock or horror. No suggestive background music or strange camera work. A bloke, with a gun, and a minute to spare. Derren managed to milk this for all it was worth with such subtlety and finesse I am astounded. It was a marvellous piece of theatre. Whatever the method (and I suspect it was fairly simple) there was almost certainly an element of risk involved. And the "mistake" and the ensuing silence was perfect.
It seems to me that Derren is way ahead of the rest at the moment and he's doing wonders for mentalism. I can't pretend I'm happy about his involvement in "Secrets of Psychics" but no one is perfect. Long after Objective Productions has disppeared DB will still be live and kicking I suspect. A |

The mistake was a superb throw-off. I knew he would do something to add to the tension. He always does. I'm quite sure he used some sort of trickery to achieve it. And some superb acting, probably taught to him by Mr Nyman.
If he did use body language then he did it the hard way. Nevertheless, I, like everyone else, had my heart pounding, and my backside off my seat in the tension that was built. Absolute Magic. |

Bravo Derren Brown! Stunning stuff!
Like Andrew, I've been less than impressed by his involvement in that other program, and surprised too (if for no other reason than it seems, to me, like he's slumming it. He's also left himself open to any prospective exposer who takes issue with his 'all done through NLP' presentation). However, his contribution to 'Secrets of the Simian' was forgotten, and all but forgiven, with his performance last night. If you missed it, I urge you to beg borrow or steal a copy. You will revel in his artistry. Caleb Strange.

The exposure thing is a worry these days. You only need one person "in the know" to be approached with enough cash and Derren could be getting the same treatment Geller has had.
It's tempting, I must admit, I could expose at least 80% of last nights show without doing any research ( or at least replicate the effects I can only guess how Derren did it). The thing is, I don't think I'm the only one on here that could. There are probably many. The more exposure shows that go on, the more exposers that will take part. I think Derren was mad to take part in the Secrets of the Psychics. |

It must be said in defense of Derren - and Ali Bongo (former head of the Magic Circle)and other magicians interviewed in "Psychic Secrets Revealed" - that their interviews in that program have not actually exposed any magic or mentalism entertainment effects (at least to date).
The fact is, that when you are interviewed in, or perform or otherwise appear in a TV documentary, you do not know either the script or exactly how the final cut of the program will turn out. |

If any of you have a copy of the program that you would be able to duplicate for me (across the pond), I would be more than pleased to reimburse you for your time and expenses.
Please PM me. Many thanks! Bob |

I seem to recall reading about a channel 5 show on which Derren exposed some stuff - metal bending.
He may have only been interviewed on the "Psychic Secrets Revealed" show but I understand that he has exposed elsewhere. As Shrink rightly says it's an odd choice because he's opening himself up to exactly the same kind of exposure. Hey, maybe it's a master plan. Someone will come and knock Derren off his perch in a couple of years by emulating him then going one step further. Someone created by the same team! Regards, David. |

No one watches Channel 5 anyway, so I for one am ready to forgive Derren for appearing on that show.
Anyway, for anyone who has not seen Derren in action, here are some very interesting video clips you may want to take a look at: http://www.channel4.com/science/microsit......een.html |
