I would love to have gone, but alas, this is the busy season. Theatre Macabre just opened and I may not get to "sleep in" for quite a while.
Have fun and fill us in on the details when you get back. Dave |

Hey guys, if you'd like a Bizarre Gathering, try the world's longest-running Bizarre Magick Gathering. The 12th annual Gathering of the Inner Circle of Bizarre Magick. Jeff was there last year. Eugene will be there this year. He's doing a lecture and a special unadvertised class on Sunday.
This is in November, which is a slower time of the year. Here's info: http://www.icbmmagick.com/pages/Gathering2003.html Be there, or be sorry :-( Magickally, Dave Birtwell |

Wish I were going as well. I'll be in Chicago to do the Family Fearfest. Guess I won't be getting a lesson from Eugene.

Fear not, we will give a review on the Bizarre Magick website, and perhaps if I am very very good and can save my money (by not buying so many toys.....<sigh>)I could manage to get to one or more of those other gatherings-Vegas, close drive (12 hours) relatives to crash with, what more could a girl want!
Also, I sort of got the impression that the Inner circle event was sort of invitation only, at least I had that impression from the website, though it might have just been me!

Kaytracy:
The Inner Circle Gatherings are open to ALL who wish to attend. The membership is by invitation only. This event has pretty much been attended by the who's who in Bizarre Magick in North America. It's a wonderful chance to meet some of these people. As for dealers, Brother Shadow and Mary Tomich (Thaumysta)have been staples at the event for years. I've attended the last 8 years. I started attending 4 years before I was asked to join. My wife looks forward to this Gathering every year, as it is a VERY social environment ... that is, the hospitality suite is a major portion of the event. Originally, the event was a one day affair, but has recently changed to a 2-day and one evening event much like Docc Hilford's Weerd Weekends. If you search their web site, you will notice that many of the major names in the Bizarre field are members. Also, the Gathering in Edinburgh Scotland is another event open to all who would like to attend (limited to about 50 registrants, however). I won't be able to attend this year's, but was able to attend the last one in 2001. Here's a link to the information about this event (although this event has been sold out for some time). http://www.dragonskull.co.uk/events.htm By the way, DragonSkull, in my opinion, is one of the best, if not the best, resources for the Bizarre Magickian. Check out the site! One thing I will say about these type of events is that you will quicky discover that Bizarre Magickians are among the friendliest magicians you can ever meet. Most of them don't possess the egotistical personality you might find in other branches of magic. My wife even noticed this fact. Also, the Bizarrists I've meet really like to have fun. So there's still time for others out there who would like to attend a Bizarre Gathering. Just contact Joe Cabral, the Grand Magus, at the phone number or email address provided on the ICBM web site. Hope to see some of you there! Magickally, Dave Birtwell |

Thank you Dave!
Alas my budget for much vacation taking is shot for this year, but I will now be able to start saving and looking to some of the other events that occur. I think I still remember how to dress for the east coast in the late fall! I look forward to meeting folks whenever the chance happens! Perhaps next year!

After Tony Andruzzi's final Invocational, Docc Hilford started his Weerd Weekend. After nine of them, Docc got tired of the work required. Joe Cabral's Gathering in Connecticut is now the place for bizarrists to meet. It is open to all interested in this type of magic.
I will be lecturing on the use of powerful magnets and also performing at this November's Gathering. I hope to see some of you from this forum there.

So...can anyone tell me if we have any such type of gathering on the West coast? How much interest would there be in having something on the west coast? Or are folks only up for the once a year or so heading East?

The Weekend
The Bizarre Weekend was combined with the Fall Fest activities put on by the Vegas Vortex group, and left one with a very full plate if so inclined to participate. The atmosphere was friendly and helpful, and provided a constructive and safe place to share and obtain guidance or help with works in progress. Having this be my first event of this particular nature, I was very favorably impressed. I actually learned many new and fine things (bwa ha haaaa) The opportunity to spend extra time in the evening with Eugene Burger was a wonderful surprise for me, and educational as well. Of the 13 attending, 5 of us were female, a count that surprised more than one person, in a good way too I might add. As this was the First attempt at having a school session devoted to Bizarre, there was a bit of topic massaging going on while the curriculum got settled into, but I think if you consider the instructors for this class, It follows the intent by deffinition. You are left with the feeling that a simple card trick is no longer so simple, at least not with the tools you have to work it with. A question to ask yourself is how do you define Bizarre Magick,(especially compared to the general magic seen today) How do you present it, and what is your goal? I think a survey of the Café would reveal some very interesting answers. Overall, I felt the time and money was well worth it. I was not asked to buy anything "extra" while there, though the opportunity was made available, for about a half hour on the last day. We had pleasant and supportive conversations, and people were very sharing of ideas to make effects better, smoother or easier.

Kaytracy,
I'm glad you had a good time with Jeff and Eugene. I've been to several of their events (given together and separately) and find them very supportive and willing to help almost anyone who is serious about improving their magic. I with I'd been able to make it to Vegas for the Bizarre Weekend. Alas, I was tied up with a performance in Chicago (which went well by the way). I literally wouldn't have been able to do that without them. I met the group I performed with out in Vegas a year and a half ago. So did you have a work in progress you presented? How'd it go? By the way I'm enjoying the new bizarremagick.com. You've done a good job preserving the spirit that Doug imbued in it. Keep up the good work. Mark

Thanks for the kind words on the site, Tory promises now that we are home she will do more stuff on the site-she is the brain and I am the mouth!
Well, I did play with my Valykyrie's choice, and showed it around, but it is intended to be an outdoor piece, and I didn;t want to get water all over the floors! I think I will have to "find" a few more of these horns from Valhalla and make them available if any are interested. This one being my first experience, I will know better what to take for next time, and be able to have an actual work in progress to share!

Hi Kaytracy
It's Navy Jim I had a blast in class and am going to reccomend it to anyone that is interested in Bizarre Magic and if they have another one next year, I'm there...I'm thinking about going to Jeff's "Handling Human's" classes in March with Max Mavin. I have a feeling it's going to be a trip. I loved your Valykyrie's choice effect, I think it has alot of great potental. But I think you right in saying that it's mainly an outdoor effect. Like you, Next time I'm going to take advantage of all the brain power in the room and have some works in progress when I go there next time. When you get a chance drop me a line and let me know how you and Tory are doing and I'm still seaching for all those books Eugene and Jeff recomended and still can't find a site to pick up a Book Box so maybe you ( and the rest of you guys out there ) can help me find one. Hope to hear from you soon Jim |

There is probably still time to register for the ICBM Gathering near Hartford, CT, on November 13-16. (See the exact schedule in a posting above.)
I will be lecturing on the uses of magnets in magic. If you attend, be sure to identify yourself as a Magic Café bizarrist to me at some point. There are several opportunities for informal socializing at The Gathering.

Just wanted you all to know that the 12th Annual ICBM Gathering was a blast! I won't go into details here, but if you missed it ... well, you missed it. It was great to see old friends and make some new ones.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!! The 13th Annual ICBM Gathering is scheduled to be held on November 11, 12, 13, 2004 - Enter The Side Show! It will be held at the same location (The Radison in Cromwell CT). Keep an eye on their web site at: http://www.icbmmagick.com Events: (http://www.icbmmagick.com/events.php) This gives plenty of time for anyone who wishes to be there to save up $$$ and plan their calendar in advance. I feel a year is enough time for anyone who REALLY wants to be there to make plans. Hope to see you all there next year! Magickally, Dave Birtwell |
