Where do you guys (and gals) like to have your pockets in your coat. Higher or lower?.. I've been experimenting and for IH I like lower.. as for reg. I like higher.. is that weird or is it just me? lol...

Justin: I don't think there is a right or wrong place to have your pockets. The location of the pocket is dependant on your act and comfort. I have pockets at waist height, mid chest and upper chest, 3 on each side. The particular routine I'm doing plays a big part on which one I use. I would be very uncomfortable using an IH from the waist or upper chest pockets for example.

As for me, anywhere is ok for IH and Reg. The most important thing is that there must be no tell tale bulges in your coat. Believe it or not, I even made a coat with 5 pockets on each side. But now I use a tail coat for my dove act. It looks much trimmer and fit so no one suspects my dove productions.
Another point is I start producing doves from the upper pockets and my last ones at the lower most. I find this safer because there are times when my loops catch on the upper ones and you unexpectedly produce two doves instead of one. Smile

Some reasons for specific placement would include personal preference, place and whats being done during the act, and of course for those with the battle of the bulge....higher up on chest. Smile

Good point Macaw. I do the same except I work from the bottom up. Just the way my act is. Five pockets on one side, WOW. Must have been a weight off your shoulders (pun intended) when the act was finished.

Thanks guys.. yeah I figure the reg. higher.. otherwise it would be a little too obvious don't you think?.. Also what kind of loops do you guys use?.. I actually just use fishing line. It's extremely comfortable to me and I can grab it easily. Also very undetectable.

Ah another question of preference. I started out using line but then switch to wire. It's undetectable and stays wherever you bend it. I have special loop holders for them. Sometimes I have the loops outside and other times they're inside the coat. Having them inside is great for close work.

Yeah I figured it would be preference.. I was thinking about using wire also.. thin like the wire inside garbage bag twisties..they actually work pretty good if you can get the paper off of them.

I use a thicker wire for my dove bags and the loops are concealed behind the jacket. I developed my own system. I haven't seen any magician use it. Some magicians thought I was using an IH. It is just a matter of feeling for it with my second finger.

For the IH, I use the thin wire which is bent in the lapel. I usually start with the IH productions. This convinces the audience from the start that your doves appear from nowhere. I then go closer to the audience with my other regular steals.

Sounds like you have an excellent show there macawmagic..

Normally I feel for the loop right with my thumb.. once and awhile ill put a tiny spot of elmers glue to hold the loop to the inside of my jacket right where the button holes are.. The glue breaks away in a second and it leave no marks on your coat.. This way I know exactly where the loops are at all times.. there is nothing worse then a lost loop as you all know.

I came up with a version of airtight by Jay Sankey into a dove in balloon.. it works beautifully.. I am going to use it in my kids show.

Regards,
Justin

Airtight? Can you describe this effect? Thanks.

Basically the effect is.. you take a deck of cards.. have a spectator select one.. take out an unused balloon.. hold it in one hand, and take the deck and slap it right INTO the balloon. The cards look to penetrate right through. You blow up the balloon .. tie it, shake it up to shuffle, and pull the spectators card right THROUGH the balloon.

My variation:

After shuffling the cards in the balloon.. I pop it to reveal a dove flying out.. as the dove perches back on my finger, he card (say 8<3) is printed on the back of the dove. (Note I can do this to adults and children.. so the bird will be permanently used in this area..) Also tied to the bird will be the spectators card.

It works for a good ending routine, especially at a kids show when I can't do my haunted straitjacket escape.

Streetmagician, both Tony clarks and Gen Grant's pockets are good. Tony's are single, rectangular pockets sewn into the jacket wherever you want them and Gen's are full jacket length.

You can order Gen's directly from him through E-mail at ggmagic@aol.com. They come in one or two bird configurations.
