Is Max's show family friendly for children ages 8-9?

I attended the show last night and can say there's nothing overtly inappropriate for a younger audience. He makes a few innuendos but any prime time TV show would be even racier. However, the show is quite cerebral so kids that age would not get a lot of the content and as such would be likely to get bored.

I'd concur with Steven on that, Michael. There's nothing risque or inappropriate but 90% of it is going to go right over the kids' heads. Hell, I think half of it goes over the adults' heads and that's a big piece of the fun! The man makes you think, taht's a hell of a trick in itself and I've been immersing myself in Kabuki all week. Hire a sitter, take the wife out for a nice dinner, and be prepared to be blown away!

I saw the matinee on Saturday. It was a small crowd, but he created a well-crafted, enjoyable show. He weaved together a few interesting themes and punctuated the flow with solid effects that involved members of the audience. The show begins with a 50/50 proposition, the outcome of which will not be determined until the end of the show. On the surface a 50/50 does not seem too impressive, but he addresses this eloquently and it his point to make us care. He does so decidedly with a very satisfying finish.
I was surprised by the number of effects he performed involving playing cards. One of the spectators made a mistake in remembering his card, but Max handled the miscue perfectly and it became a funny moment, with a little serendipity that possibly made the revelation stronger. The weakest part of the show for me was the blindfold sequence. Knowing how it's done and what to look for made it a bit "ho-hum" for me, but the lay audience was genuinely mystified, and possibly scared... The most important lesson learned for me was the importance of presentation. Simple effects, masterfully performed, astonish audiences! |
