I have a Business degree (marketing and small business entrepreneurship majors). I go back and forth on wondering, if I went back in time, if I would choose to get that education again. Since I don't need the piece of paper, does it have value?
I'm curious: For those with business degrees, do you see it as valuable for being in this business? For those who do not, do you wish you had such education? I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Similarly, as an entrepreneur, would you suggest to your own children to get formal education? |

In reality I learned far more since school. But it put me in the position to be able to do so.

I have a B.S. and a Masters and got it them when I was single. I seldom even mention it anymore and with a family now, I probably would not seek it if had it all over to do. Mine was paid for through the military. It pays off because we get a stipend from my bill paying job.
With the new world order, who knows how degrees will pay off these days and trying times. Comp

Scott,
I've always earned my living as a performer. And at the start, I was completely naive about the business side of things. I guess you could say I "learnt the ropes" by paying my dues in the "school of hard knocks." From that perspective, I feel I really could have benefitted from some knowledge of how the business works (especially early on). By the same token: I have a degree in music. To attain that, I studied hard and gained an enormous amount of knowledge. That knowledge has benefited me tremendously in my career. But the actual certificate has never ever landed me a job in the music business. What I would suggest to anyone whose children plan to enter the entertainment industry is: get an education in some other field (which has prospects of a good salary, weekly paycheck, health benefits, retirement plan, and longevity). |

I have a BS and Masters ... along with 25 years in marketing management for a Fortune 50 company. While my education allows me to analyze and present things from multiple perspectives, my ideas and creativity have always been the same. I can assure you that an MBA won't make you a better performer or person. I am still very active in continuing education programs through the American Marketing Association and can definitely say I learn more tactical ideas from a magic meeting. Magicians are far ahead of many Fortune 50 companies with digital marketing initiatives. The one area where magicians often lack is having a legitimate strategic plan. I would even argue this is a broad issue for magic as a whole in that our leadership and strategies with magic organizations are well intentioned but short sighted.

I have a BA degree in Business Information Education. Now known as a MIS degree. I have taken many of the same classes that a MBA would take. The only class that I would say has applied to my magic business is Entrepreneurship a 200 level class that was very broad in nature.
My wife on the other hand has her studies in Hospitality Management, and I would say she knows more on how to run a successful small magic business then I do. Thus why I allow her to do so ;-) None of the above has a thing to do with the entertaining side, only the business side. "Similarly, as an entrepreneur, would you suggest to your own children to get formal education" YES or at least take classes that relate.
No one said it would be easy, or did they?

My educational background is in business/marketing. Also have a minor in Psychology. For the past 15 years, I have been a stock broker and a commercial banker. I Love magic but it will always be a side profession for me. At least until I retire. Overall, the business degree has helped in the magic business. But common sense has also helped as well.

Good Question Howie Diddot. The answer is yes. It beats 10-12 hours in an office all day long. I always say magic is the job I love.

As an old published university professor who taught MBAs and undergrads, my answer is "You bet I would!" My academic fields are Marketing, Management and Finance. I also have some additional PhD. background in Film and TV production that helped.
At age thirteen, I began a career as a professional entertainer. At age 67, I can say life has been an adventure. The education was certainly critical to my career path as an entertainer. It is how I worked my way through many years of college and it opened many doors. It also opened doors for other business opportunities not available to my magician friends without the academic credentials to be on corporate boards of directors, COB, CEO and CFO in my own businesses and for others both in and out of the USA. My degrees have never even been framed to be put on the wall. They were for me. Of course, I still perform magic professionally and lecture to magicians and at magicians’ conventions. To me it is as basic as a thumb tip to being a pro. Don’t leave home without it! Being well prepared to walk and chew gum is priceless to a professional magician. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
