There are 100 collector's editions, which includes an extra DVD, signatures from Jay, Joshua, and Andi, as well as an original page from of one of Jay's notebooks. It also comes in "leatherette" (whatever that is), plus a slipcase.

Considering that each volume is over 500 pages, these books are an excellent value.
Does anyone know if the material on the DVDs was shot new for this project or is taken from Jay's existing DVDs?

I am not a fan of Sankey's business practices and if he was selling this as opposed to Vanishing Inc, I would not buy it. But having said that, I DO admire much of Sankey's thinking - Erdnase transformation notwithstanding - and I echo Motown's conclusion that this set IS an excellent value; so many books are now coming in at 80-85.00 USD. I placed my order with Vanishing this morning.
I do have to admit that it was a bit of a debate for me as I have a LOT of Sankey's effects scattered throughout my library both from his books/DVDs plus his contributions to journals. So it may be that I have a decent portion of what is available in this set already, but, the same can be said for Vernon, Marlo, James, etc., collections that it's cool to have the material in a set. Andi Gladwin and Joshua Jay produce quality and I am certain this set will be one for the record books. Now if Marshall could get the rest of The Subtle Card Magic of Nick Trost completed I would be VERY happy. Namaste, Vlad PS: And for Harry Lorayne to republish Star Quality!! Nobody seems to be selling it here across the pond! |

Quick answer to Duaneberry's comment. Nick laid out nine volumes, exactly how he wanted them, before his passing. So to answer you question, there are nine volumes although we might end up combining a few volumes to save everyone money and cut down on the time it takes to get all of his work out.

After seeing the TOC, I was very impressed with the organization of the 3 books, as well as the design/layout of the pages.

I was reading the June edition of Magic. They do have excerpts of the books.
Now; this is *very* minor and just me being weird I guess. In the "Traveling Expenses" effect (the performance portion), it says: "Borrow a bill and invite a spectator to punch a hole in each corner (photo 2)"... Well, photo 2 is a photo of the "holes" in one corner. Supposed to be Photo 3. This is *not* a big deal at all, and does not make a difference for me. I understand what "they" mean. I just wonder if this same mistake is in the actual book, or was it a "Magic" mistake? I only paid $6 for the magazine. But if I buy the books, it is these small details that bug me when I am paying a *lot* of money for a product. Honest mistake? Sure. I have a ton of Sankey products. Great magician and has made an impact in magic for sure. I would love to get these... But a bit above my budget for now. I guess this is reason #1 to re-release this as 2nd edition? LOL Thanks and I hope this doesn't upset anyone. Not my intention at all. Mike |

I received mine today -excellent service and FAST from California to The Netherlands in 8 days!
The books are heavy paper stock and the books stay open for hands on the cards, coins, etc., study. Andi and Joshua have truly produced a superb set. Considering that magic books are now being released at 60, 70. 80, and more USD, these are a steal at 50 USD a shot - IF you buy the set. Individually the volumes are 80 USD and I would still consider THAT an excellent price. Each effect is given a difficulty rating from 1 to 5 stars. However the rating system - like any - is subjective. Sometimes the difficulty ratings do NOT match the method description or even the introductory comments. There are 4 star effects that are described as very simple. Now, if we are given to understand in the Ortiz sense that "easy" and "simple" mean two different things then the seeming disparity becomes less problematic. That said, I think that the "star" rating is really unnecessary. Yes, it is an innovation but what is easy or simple for Andi and Joshua may not be easy or simple for Bob the Magic dude. A NICE feature that I think many will like is that Andi and Joshua tagged via a corner graphic any effect that is strictly impromptu. Also, a number of major league hitters such as David Regal, Chad Long, Richard Sanders, Rune Klan, and other were asked to name their top ten Sankey effects in this collection. In a neat twist, instead of just making a pedestrian list, if an effect is a top ten favorite of one of these magicians, the magician's picture, name, and the words "Top Ten Pick" are - appropriately - graphically "paperclipped" at the top of the page. The chapters are well organized and even though Sankey has released a TON of magic through the years, there are some hidden gems. Table hoppers take note: there are some fun chapters devoted to magic for ankle-biters (kids) and let's face it, unless you're working a Playboy club, you ARE going to have kids at the venue and you will need magic that entertains both the ankle biters and those whose ankles are bitten. Collections like this are the types of books I love: Stewart James in Print, The James File, Sam's: The Magic of Sam Schartz, Al Baker's Secret Ways, The Card Magic of Nick Trost and Nick Trost's Subtle Card Magic. Harry Lorayne's Classic Collection volumes and of course Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment series. Sankey HAS drawn fire from magicians because of the sheer QUANTITY of work he has produced. And it is true that you cannot hit a home run every time you're at bat. But there is no denying that Jay Sankey HAS produced some wonderful magic through the years. Andi and Joshua are also quite clear that there ARE experimental effects and even pipedreams in the books; I appreciate the honesty. Back to the chapters: I also like that the chapters are categorized. But these are categorized not only according to prop type but ALSO whether or not effects require those added somethings. David Regal has done this with his work as has Nick Trost so Andi and Joshua are in VERY good company here. In short, the books are pleasantly inviting to research and to read. Five hundred effects and dozens of essays comprise this three volume set. The crediting seems quite complete in this set and the indices would make Harry Lorayne proud. Also scattered throughout the book are some of Jay Sankey's hand drawn comics. There is a sort of Far Side feel to them and most should give you a chuckle. I am not a "Sankey" addict but these books are, IMHO, a worthy addition to any serious magician's working library; even Sankey detractors should seriously consider buying this set. At the end of the day there is no denying that Jay Sankey's contributions to the art are important and Andi Gladwin and Joshua Jay have done a superb job - difficulty rating system notwithstanding - in creating a beautifully produced chronicle of this man's work. Recommended without reservation. Namaste, Vlad PS: Yes I AM aware that I made a snarky comment about "the one with the Erdnase Change." Still, these books ARE excellent even with that "one" effect. PPS: I wanted to add one more point: This first impressions is of course completely subjective as is any full blown review. However, I wanted to let you know that late last year I removed myself from Jay Sankey's mailing list. I won't go into detail but suffice to say that this positive first impressions post was written as objectively as possible; so objective in fact that when these were announced I was NOT going to buy them. But despite a negative experience, the better part of me understood that Sankey IS an important force in our art. |

Can't wait to receive my books, Vlad!
Thanks for the indepth review. I dislike the fact that Slowmotion Coins isn't in the book, since that effect is one of my top picks for favorite Sankey effects (Along with Stirring Silver, Fan Mail, Paperclipped and Back in Time ), but I read the index of the book and it is just huge. I really can';t wait. How is the description? Is it clearly written and easily understood? |
