Last night I was up at the Magic Castle, perfomring in one of the overflow rooms. These are two rooms that are not officially booked, but simply have members perfroming at random. this helps with the fact that the place is filled to capacity and some guests are shut out of the larger room shows. Between nine and midnight I did four shows, alternating with a few other mostly card and close up workers. I believe my sets went very well. I did have one issue though.
I was doing my signiture piece. My hands wrapped in chains, held with a big old heavy padlock. I then pick the lock using a dime held in my teeth. This effect gets more shocked looks than applause, but I enjoy doing it. At my third set one woman sitting at the table close by, had been burning me with her eyes the whole show through. Luckily the way I work, there are no slights to catch and only a very few well hidden gimmicks. So I really didin't care other than it was uncomfortable to be burned like that. Turned out she was a psychologist, and I guess she was there more to ferret out secrets than to enjoy the show. After I opened the lock, she asked to examine it. The lock had already been in her hand as it was locked onth the chains. She very possibly could have examined it without finding anything, but I did not feel like indulging her or taking the risk. So even though she was right next to me, I did not hear her, I put the lock away, and went on to the next. I am wondering how you would have handled it?

If possible, I would have an ungimmicked duplicate in the same container into which I placed the gimmicked lock after the stunt.
If someone asked to see it, I would turn with a casual "HM?" AS I PUT THE LOCK AWAY. When she repeated the request, I would then shrug and hand her the duplicate, moving immediately into my next bit, ignoring her with a clear air of unconcern.
