I should begin by saying that I am a beginning magic amateur and have so far only performed for family, friends, and colleagues.
My sequence involving Justin Miller's Freedom Pack runs as follows at the moment: I begin with Red Hot Mama, explaining that a magician has lots of ways of finding the selected card, e.g. he can recolour it. After that I say that I will now try to find the newly selected card again, but I promise not to change the back colour ("after all, anyone could find a card if it was the only red card in a blue deck"). I turn around while the spec signs his new card, and then I perform Justin's Brain Freeze, remarking that since I was not allowed to change the selected card, I changed the remaining 51. The boxing of the card, the changed backs, and the turned over card deliver three punches in such quick succession, that I am thinking of having a jug of water ready to revive the specs. Thank you, Justin! Now for the question. I had the idea of a comical take on the same routine: after Red Hot Mama, and after promising that I will not change the card again I turn around while the spec signs the blue backed card, then turn back and ask him to put it in the middle of the pack - but wait! I am holding a red backed deck in my hand. Of course the spec is hesitant, and I pretend that I don't understand his reluctance ("What's the matter?! Go on, put it in, don't worry I will find it again!") Once (s)he has finally put the card into the deck, I say something along the lines of "Oh, now I see. You don't think that that's challenging enough...". I box the deck in magical Justin Miller manier, take it out and the deck is now blue backed. When the spec is astonished, but satisfied that my task is now adequately difficult, I say something like "Great! And how am I supposed to find your bloody card now, that it looks exactly like all the others? Oh, I have an idea." I spread the deck out face up, and we see that one card is turned over. My only problem with this is that if after turning around I have a different deck in my hand, it becomes obvious that I switched decks, and I worry that it might send the spec's thoughts in an undesirable direction. What do the experienced magicians think? Is this just magician's guilt or is this a legitimate worry? In general, what do you think of my "Brain Freeze the wrong way round"? |

Sounds like a fun routine to me, with a couple of nice kickers. Try it and see how it flies.

Thank you, MaxfieldsMagic. You don't think that giving away the deck switch will lessen the magical impact?
Interestingly, when you perform Brain Freeze the right way round, i.e. the way Justin Miller intended it, even though a deck switch is, to a magician, still the only plausible explanation, the specs don't seem to think that way. |

Your deck switch makes for a nice gag, IMO, since it appears that you've done it to locate the card. It's entertaining, so it's good. Even better, it creates a nice off beat and softens them up for what comes next. Stay serious like nothing happened, and they'll either laugh or look at you with a "you're kidding, right?" expression. Then... bam - you hit them with the appearing box, followed by a color change back to a blue deck, and then the face up card. That's plenty of magic for one routine, IMO.

Alex,
Thank you so much for the kind words. I LOVE what your doing with FP. As far as the "deck switch" phase, as long as its presented in a comical manner I think it is a great idea. JM |

Well there you go, Alex - straight from the creator's mouth. Cool.

Awesome, I was hoping Justin would chime in here Now I have the blessing of the creator himself. Haven't got round to trying it out for real yet, but definitely will in the future.
It's a good point that the deck switch itself should be presented in a comical manner, thanks, Justin! I am thinking of a lot of fumbling in the pockets (while with the back to the specs), cursing, turning over several seconds after the spec is done signing, etc. Really looking forward to trying it out now |
