I was stoked about Guy Kawasaki’s book, “Enchantment,” which for me read like a collection of well-written slogans and faux-cool concepts masquerading as “deep marketing solutions.”
I abandoned the book mid-way through. Have any of you experienced similar “biblio abandonments?” If so, what was the book and what turned you off?

Moby Dick.
I was riveted by the first few pages. All that wonderful atmosphere! But the book gets really bogged down in places. By the time I finished I really didn't care about whether the white whale would be caught or not. I just wanted the book to end. |

In high school I tried to read "The Hobbit". After a few chapters, I was bored silly. But that hardly qualifies as "lately".
(Interestingly, I devoured the Harvard Lampoon's parody, "Bored of the Rings".) |

I was half way through The Koran when Moby Dick came out of the blue and harpooned me.

Not lately but I couldn't get into "Cujo." It was just so completely overly detailed. I couldn't find the story between all of the scenery.

I couldn't get through "Carter Beats the Devil" His mis-characterization of Houdini, his weird blending of historical figures with fictional characters that were just thinly veiled historical figures made the book unreadable for me.

"The Hunt for Red October".
I loved "Red Storm Rising" - read it first - then read some of his others and liked those, too. Then I finally decided to try the one that started it all, and gave up halfway through. Just didn't hold my interest. I worked at a book story ("Taylors" in Dallas) and borrowed "Red Storm..." and brought it home, and - I still remember this vividly - after the first few pages came the line, "Truly, they were doing Allah's work!" From that point I was hooked on that book. Read it at least 6-7 times.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Blood is a Rover by James Ellroy. I love the guy's writing, but from American Tabloid onwards he seems to have lost himself in a stylistic cul-de-sac. I abandoned it after less than a third.
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is another I just don't get. I have read it a few times, but fail to see how it is so highly regarded. But I have to say I loved Moby Dick - I reread it every couple of years.

At some point I found myself being annoyed by his prose--in spite of the fact that in his early books it was precisely his prose (rather than his elaborate plotting) that had me so riveted. I blame his editor. |

But seriously- I speed read technical manuals etc. But never fiction or poetry. I like to savor what I'm reading and pause to reflect on it. Not cram it down like a Big Mac on a five minute lunch break.
