Hey Critter... It's nice when they get older and begin having a more mature relationship, there's just new issues to deal with. LOL

Strange that you are "pretty sure" that my position can be shot down with a few simple examples, since the myth of multi tasking has been widely debunked. Simply do a google search on Multi Tasking Myth and you will be astounded by the number of studies there are supporting exactly what I said. For example: http://www.forbes.com/sites/carolkinseyg......tasking/ http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story......95256794 http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/the-......itasking And exactly on point with this discussion: Quote:
The human brain does not do as well under multitasking situations, and driving while talking on the cell phone involves a particularly difficult sort of multitasking: doing a visual task (like driving) and doing an auditory task (like talking on the phone) at the same time. This sort of multitasking requires the use of two separate brain regions simultaneously. And a 2001 study by Marcel Just at Carnegie Mellon showed that when volunteers did one task at a time, they used 37 voxels (small brain regions), but when they did both a visual and an auditory task simultaneously, they only used 42 voxels—far less than double. The brain has only so much processing capacity, and adding new tasks bogs all of them down. As Just commented, “You can't just keep piping new things through, and expect the brain to keep up. With practice, the brain can become more efficient at carrying out multiple tasks, but performance is never as good as when the tasks are carried out independently.” http://www.science20.com/michael_taft/ce......ng-85822 |

The Bob is correct. Multitasking is a cute buzz word but most who claim to do it when tested fail. I use to shock people by being able to discuss soething while typing customs forms. Actually I was focused on the discussion the forms were out of habit and if stopped I wouldn't know where I had stopped.

I think the experiments discussed in the wonderful book "The Invisible Gorilla" aptly demonstrate how people won't even see a gorilla pounding his chest in the very center of a video scene if their attention is directed to something else in the scene.
The name for this is "inattentional blindness." For those who would like to experience this phenomena first hand, please feel free to continue to use cell phones while driving. Just be sure your insurance is paid up first. The question isn't IF you will cause or fail to avoid an accident. The only question is WHEN it will happen. |

I am of the opinion that these test parameters that you refer to are not representative of the type of multitasking that people do all the time, whether driving or doing other activities. I am aware of misdirection principles and how people are not really able to notice certain things when directed to focus on something specific, etc. But, I will gladly listen up or read any free lectures offered! Thanks.
No amount of legislation will eliminate distracted drivers. People get distracted all the time, no matter how severe the consequences of doing so may be. And don't think that hands free use of cell phones will last long. that's gonna have to go as well, you can easily predict this by the current cultural climate. Joe public is as easily persuaded now than ever before, it's amazing to me to observe. People will agree with the ad campaigns and political talking heads about almost anything if they hear it enough. Just step out of the box and take a look at all the garbage we are being told. We got people willing to practically return voluntarily to the stone age and force everyone else that they possibly can to do the same thing over a decades old hoax that’s never going to materialize. Almost monthly, if not more often, we get warnings of another new ban on something or some other word that’s got to go. We are really living in a strange time, probably a more historical time than most realize. Ok, my rant button is back off again. Have a great weekend ya’ll, I got a busy one lined up and might not be on much until next week. Glen
