Pretty great coin DVD. Here's a performance of my favorite routine from the release:

Are you thinking of using this as part of a larger coin assembly routine? |

My plan would be to hold on to this one for one of those instances where I'm performing for someone who's seen me do a normal matrix before, and they say something like "Oh, do that trick with 4 coins and 4 cards for my friend here" or something. That way it's still shocking and impressive for both of them, they probably won't remember it well enough to notice that the handling is a bit different.
Though it is a touch angley, so there aren't a whole load of situations where I could use this. But both French Drop dvd's are worth it just for artistic value alone, even if I never use a thing from either EDIT: Oh, and thanks for the kind words |

I just ordered this DVD myself, so once I get it and have had a chance to view it, I will offer my thoughts. I really enjoy performing some of the material from Metal Eclipse (Tristan Mory), so it will be interesting to see how the techniques compare.

Having now had the chance to sit through and watch the DVD, I actually liked it. At first glance, I will admit that while Kevin did a nice job on the voice work, the attempt to make it sound "cool" (it sounded like the words were coming through an old gramophone) made it very hard for me to understand and follow (the words), but that is coming from someone whose first language is not English. I had absolutely no problem learning any of the stuff on here after I turned the sound off.*
Having said that, I think I liked the 3 Fly, Nude and Invisible Visible the most overall, but also being a Matrix guy, I enjoyed his variations on that plot as well. At the same time, I think the DVD could have been just a bit better if there were one or two less Matrix routines on it - it seems that, as much as I love Matrices, there is a lot overkill in some of the newer DVDs. I really loved the way he used the Steeplechase as a utility of sorts - the change of four silver coins to Chinese (or whatever contrasting coins you like) is one of my favorites and is very magical. Nude is a unique and very nice production, vanish and reappearance of a coin - it looks very good but it will take some practice. As was mentioned above, it is quite similar to the vanish used and taught on Metal Eclips by Tristan Mory, but in my humble opinion and as good as the Nude version is, I think the Mory version is still better. For lack of better term, the explanation 'system' is one of the best I have ever seen. There are multiple ways of learning, some of them unique, others remniscent of the Homer Liwag CoinONE explanations (particularly the 3-D work). There are X-Ray views, 3-D views, and 3 different angle views (underside, over-the-shoulder and performer view) - which is why I called it an explanation 'system'. You can use one or you can use them all. Either way, everything is very clearly explained and well-taught, making it much easier and fun to learn for any viewer. In my opinion, strat1227 said it right when he said the artistic value alone is reason enough for watching the DVD - it is a thing of beauty. I think there may still be more than I have found, but there is a very nice hidden section on this DVD as well (and I found it quite by accident!) - what I have found so far speaks to the keen eye the rest of them will require in order to be found, if there are any more! To me, the content on this video is not really that difficult, but is definitely not for beginners. I think that a well-read and well-practiced beginning intermediate could easily get most of the stuff on here. If you are a more practiced performer that is willing to put forth the effort and are looking for something different (but not necessarily the "latest and greatest groundbreaker") to add to your repertoire, I think you will find it on this DVD. Some of the demonstrations might have benefited from a closer shot to make the coins easier to see, but it was still very easy to tell what was going on. The dubbing volume could have been a bit louder and probably would be better without the audio effects part, but again as I said above, that is the opinion of a non-native English speaker. Another thing you will find with the routines on this disc, with the exception of the Matrix routines, is that the material can be performed a chest/face height, which would frame your face nicely. Highly recommended! |

Was the audio issue really an effect??? I honestly just thought a really poor-quality microphone was used, if it's an effect I agree with you entirely. It really ruined the "english" aspect of the dvd because, like you, I just wound up muting it. There's no sense in having an English feature if it's going to be inscrutable lol

I was afraid of this guys. I'm sorry for the poor voice work I did/lended. The reason for the grittiness of the audio, it was recorded on my phone , then they te-touched it. I'm happy some of the dvd was enjoyable for you. That was 6 moths of hard work for nothing.

Now that you explained why the English sounded the way it did, it makes sense as to what happened and why it is that way, so thank you for explaining that. Since the English audio was gritty, maybe the sections in which it were used may have benefited from titles (a sort of closed-caption). Again, I think you did fine, but the end result does not seem to be where/what you intended it to be. Keep up the good work! |

Not your fault Fish. In retrospect, they should have sent you a USB microphone rig as part of the deal.

Actually, in the dubbing when I was practicing those 6 months, they did have subtitles that fitted the english voiceovers and japanese perfectly. In the dubbing as well. It's a shame they didn't keep those. I was seriously consideirng asking them to keep those subtitles on, but didn't ask. I regret that now. Failed my college class as well. Strangled myself and almost passed out, went to the ER for a failed suicide attempt while I was in the hospital for 3 weeks. Happened twice.
Now I do not quality for finaicnal aid, because I fialed the class with a 'withdrawal" and I have to pay another $300 out of pocket from my savings that my paid for my last class that I failed. Disappointed, angry, that I failed the class. Summer classse are hard, wish I would'vej ust held it together, I would've passed. I wish I would've died that day. Would'v made things easier. Wouldn't have to deal with this mess. I hate myself. Its my fault. I got myself into this mess. It was out ofm y control, the 3 weeks I was in the hospital I missed out on those last 3 weeks of college after going to the class and doing well for over a month. What's wrong with me? |

Kevin, what the heck are you doing? You know you have a ton of friends here on the Café, who all care about you. The audio was just fine! Sorry about your course, but here's a philosophy I live by....Never being afraid to fail will give you the confidence to succeed. I hope you are under the proper care, and getting better. Now its time to pick yourself up and get back on track. But NEVER, never, think that things are so bad, there is always a way to rebound. One of our Café friends here lost everything...his job, his home, his props...but he has bounced back, and is on his way. You can be too. Send me your address VIA pm, I am sending you something to help. Remember, you have a lot of people out there who love and care about you, your parents, relatives, and all of your friends here on the Café. College will happen when you are ready to tackle it again! Good luck my friend, and be sure to send me your address.

The creative process can be an interesting experience. Whenever you put anything "out there" either on the market or just posting a video of yourself, you are opening yourself up to criticism. This is part of it and is to be expected. If you are new to this, then you may not understand that criticism has to be viewed in a certain light - don't take it personal, but as part of your growth. And be perfectly clear - there is no growth without risk. So next time you know if you are to provide translation (and I think your skill to translate Japanese to English should not be taken lightly - I bet there are only a handful on the Café who can do this), you will say "hey, let's use a microphone this time".
On my last DVD project (Red Light) I had to include a "trailer" to Murphys as part of the package. I was mildly annoyed when I received some criticism on the trailer (as opposed to the content of the DVD). But later on that day, I took a more critical look at it and you know what? It could have been better. So I learned. It wasn't "all for nothing" just a learning experience. To be completely honest, I'm not sure why you are blaming yourself - Ponta the Smith is the producer of this DVD. It's his call to explain anything he produces. Anyway, just some thoughts. I like Dr. Rubenstein's advice. Listen to him. So, in summary, hakuna matata - go with the flow - water off a ducks back - and continue to take risks. Cheers! Doug |

@Dr. Rubinstein and Doug Brewer - Great advice, and very well said!
@Kevin: Dr. Rubinstein and Doug both reinforced my point - YOU did your job and did fine. The producer(s) made the choice in the end about the final product, which could have been made better with a few tools. As was said in the above two posts, you cannot be afraid of risk and failure - you just have to use the latter as a learning experience, along with any criticism as a result of putting yourself out there via the creative process, as Doug said. This video could have been far worse - the teaching and the video quality could have been so terrible that it was impossible to learn anything, audio or no audio. Even the Japanese voiceovers could have been cleaned up as far as quality goes. Take care of yourself for now and get back up on your feet - you have nothing to be ashamed of or for which to blame yourself. I have talked with the Café member that Dr. Rubinstein pointed out as having lost his job, and while he felt bad all through the experience, he considers himself proverbially all-the-richer for having had those experiences - especially the low points. The next time you do any work on a project and you have ideas, be sure to assert them (strongly!) if you feel they may make the final product that much better or that much more useful. I have done translating work for lecture notes and things like that, and it is not easy, so when Doug said that the ability to do that kind of work should not be taken lightly, he is absolutely right. Best of luck to you, and remember to keep the magic alive! |

Kevin, I'm producing the David Neighbors' new DVD set that we are planning to make available this Fall. Guess what? It's all on me: video presetation and quality, sound, packaging, marketing, distribution. Sure, I have a great associate and business partner helping me out, BUT if anything goes wrong, it's MY fault! SOMEONE should have FIXED your audio problem along the way. A "The Buck Stops Here" guy. And that guy, in this case wasn't you! Really, it was out of your hands. And it was the best you could do---especially with the tools you had.
In my case, I first need to make sure that David is happy with the product. He did the work. We want to be sure it reflects best who he is and his talent and teaching. Then we want to make sure the consumers (fellow magicians) are thrilled---which I believe they will be. A BIG responsibilty. But I wouldn't think for a moment to blame ANYONE else if it didn't turn out good. You are a talented young man. You now have the experience of dubbing, a valuable commodity. YOU are not to blame for the final product. Hang in there. The future is brighter than you think. Look for new opportunities around you. Have you noticed in this Forum there are a LOT of people that care about you?

Thanks Atom. Yes, I realize that now . Sometimes though I forget that. I told Ponta (and he agreed at the time) that it would probably be a good idea to release Monster through Ellusionist, similiar to how Sick was released. Because ellusionist has that type of target fan base, and it would create a more buzz and probably generate more buzz , just like Sick DVD. Perhaps Monster is in a different genre with the patter, though, ponta the smith does make an apperance in Mott-sun's Monster. I was a bit saddened seening it released exclusively with a contract with Murphy's Magic, as I thought the sales and it would reach more people through E.
But, this was to be expected. From talking to Ponta from years past the release of Sick, he did mention they also had in plans an exclusive contract with Murphy magic for Sick as well, probably to release it to all distirbutors at once. However, Murphy (or someone) decided it was not their best interestst o do that and contracted out to E instead. So, E claimed all exclusive rights (It still says on their website that, even though its released elsewhere), and it wasn't sold anywhere else. Ponta told me he was a bit upset they did not follow French drop's orders through Murphy's, but I reminded Ponta since that decision was made it was probably a wise one. Based on the fan base, and many (unfortunately) beginner magicians thinking the tricks would be as easy as Ponta presenteted them (They were wrong, obviously, and unfortunately) it sold out within hours (or minutes? I don't remember.) within the same day. I advised Ponta it would probably be a good idea to do the same with Monster, he agreed , and said it would probably be released through E first. But, they did not contact E apparently to even carry it. I was a bit saddened by this, as I like Ellusionist (although not completely their sales tactics) and am an elite member there myself to help out others, and seeing no interest (even though I posted the links to the video) in others from E on the video, even though it was released by Ponta (Kind of ironic), I thought the E staff would have more interest in picking it up immediately, but as of now they seem to still not have the product available. I contacted (I think) one of the people asking about doing that but, no response. I still think it would be a great idea. I think they would sale more, it would help Mott-sun as a performer, and reach a higher, probably different fan base (as some of the tricks are easier than others, perhaps this creates less of a difficulity curve/gap for younger beginner magicians), and help more people find new magic enjoyable. I'm a bit saddened by this, but it was up to someone, and someone made that decision, even though Ponta and I agreed for otherwise. Regardless, it was out of my control. I tried my best. Several times, although I have great respect for everyone there, I tried to offer advise on certain phrases that would make the most sense in English, they were however strict (but fair) on certain phrases they wanted to make more natural. Out of the chosen phrases that did not make much sense in english, it was hard (out of the options they gave) to make one fit. And sometimes, they were not completely flexible on my own wording, although sometimes (most often) they were. For example, on the DVD title, "9 well-selected coin routines." I had to a few different phrases to choose from that they wanted. Finding a compromise and finding one that would fit was difficult. They said it was for the poster, I was guessing a disturburtino advertisment poster, I didn't expect that to be on the cover of the DVD Insert. Regardless, I feel a bit disappointed I chose that phrase. I feel I should've chosen a different phrase that made more sense- perhaps more natural. I also corrected the descriptions (on most websites provide it) of each trick. This was very difficult, without losing the intended meaning. And although the english given made sense, it was not natural or perhaps even, not appropriate for the context. So, I tried my best. And that was all I could do. You can tell which magic companies used it by the famous magicians who spoke for the DVD as good, as on this website: http://themagicwarehouse.com/DA7876/Monster-by-MottSun.html Also listed is the English translation of each trick. Although it is not completely description, I tried my best to correct it. They were very accomodatling in letting me add some words to make it more natural (although it still compeltely isn't. I'm wondering why certain distribors, perhaps for this reason, chose not to list it this way and just list the tricks with bullet points, leaving out all references , while others didn't.) I suggest you read it. I think it makes more sense that way. I don't know if you've seen this, but also Frenchdrop has released an international website advertising monster and its contents in English. you may even be able to order it from french drop, although I doubt it (as they list multiple different sources to buy it from from around the world). Here's the website: https://www.frenchdrop.com/drop/monster.html |
