In today's PC world, and everybody hyper about anything "sharp" around people, especially children, or worse drunk adults, I came up with an idea. Somebody said it was on a video, but I haven't seen that either - so IF I am stepping on somebody's routine, please excuse me.
This started out because I had troubles with a children's show a few years ago - the parents were worried that the kids might try this themselves. With all the boob-tube stuff and Jack-A** on TV one never knows what kids will try to imitate. Sitting around thinking about the original way cut and restored rope works, I came up with another gaff. ONE piece of rope, about six feet long, folded into thirds, with a gaff on each "loop" - and - tying the thing into a bundle with the three ropes apparently already cut. Opening the knots, then tying the gaffs, it looks to be three ropes tied together. Looping it into the hand, it becomes one big piece again. So far, it has worked well, and been received well. There are no site lines to worry about. I have done this effect with people just about at my elbow, and it works if one if careful - THINK about it, and you could also do this one. It packs neatly in the case, comes out ready to roll, and can be reset in a few minutes in the "corner" - bathroom - just off stage anyplace, and done again. I did it several times in one afternoon to a group, resetting the thing off stage, and it was seen several times and people still don't understand the thing. Just one way I am adapting to the PC world of today - keeping sharp things out of the hands of potential trouble, and still putting on a good show. -- Mitch --
It is easier to try than to prove it can't be done.

Without my 5 minute cut and restore routine the whole paranoid PC, youtube, facebook, twitter, texting, emailing world would be disappointed in me having a boring show. When I do a show I always say "who wants to see something dangerous" and the whole room cheers. I think someone is feeding you bogus data.

Seriously I took my dress makers scissors to the knife grinding shop and had him ground down the points on my scissors for a bit of safety. A good pair of scissors these days (from JoAnn fabrics) comes in a hard plastic case too.

Yes, you are re-inventing a trick that has been around since the 1940's. I believe it is Hen Fetsch rope trick. I believe Gene Gordon (famous magic store and dealer in New York City) sold it as 4 to 1 rope trick of something like that.
Dick Stoner uses it as his introduction to the Cut and Restored Rope routine. So now you have one long piece of rope, what are you going to do with it? Ta-Da! That is it? |

Al is right! Grind the points off the scissors. I did this years ago after cutting my finger while FAKING a cut for the Tabary Routine!
Oh, and I still use flash paper for my bill routine even though it's not PC in many venues. As an old married man...I know it's always easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission! Andre

In order to perform "the Vishnu Rope Mystery" properly you must press, and slide the point of your scissors against the back of your hand. If I did not have the tip of my scissors ground down I could not be able do this trick convincingly.

Wow! an audience that doesn't know how to use scissors correctly and you with an opportunity to impart skills that will serve a lifetime? What more can a magician ask for?
Kids aren't taught how to tie their own shoe-laces at home -- expecting a kindergarden teacher to impart that skill. Guess I can't do that trick any more either. ;-)

Different locales seem to have different ideas of what is okay for kids to do. I understand your desire to avoid liability issues.
Some other thoughts you might want to consider include: Fiber Optics - uses a standard Professor's Nightmare setup and adds a lot of other stuff, including a "cut" with finger "scissors" - also known as the number 2. You can do 5-6 minutes with the moves in this routine (but it might get old afer 3). Used copies of this DVD show up on the for sale board fairly often. Everlasting C&R rope - Patrick Page apparently invented this method using a common gaffus device added to rope. The effect is a fairly standard looking cut and restore, but you don't actually use up any rope and can re-use your material for as long as it isn't too dirty. Available commercially or on his Rope and Paper DVD. Personally, I like actually cutting the rope. I feel like it makes a trick stronger if I can let someone examine the rope, too. There's something more attention-getting about flashy scissors than about fingers in the V-shape. -Patrick |

Mr. Wooleryy, I must agree. I have found that the scissors visibly cutting through the rope makes all the difference in the world to most people. I hear the comment, "But I WATCHED you CUT the rope!" every time I do my ropes routine. The finger-cut practically screams 'FAKE!" though I've seen good handling of the move--many times. I think the finger maneuver works best as a surprise in the midst of a longer bit where several "true" cuts have already been made.
