When I work cards, I sometimes get the usual question - "Are you using a trick deck?" .... Actually ANY deck can become a "trick deck" if it is stacked, or otherwise prepared.
To answer the question - "Well, sometimes yes." When one is using cards as part of a total show, one needs shortcuts to save time, and assure the effect goes off without a hitch. Sometimes I use the Tarbell "Deck Switch" method when I am using a force deck to get the thing going, other times I just switch deck openly or use two decks just to change up the routine. BUT to answer the questions and really get some goof going, use a DeLand's $100 deck. This thing is super busy. "Going to the Movies" really gets them going as there is so much going on in every circle. I don't use most of it, but it is a nice deck for the effects it can produce without a lot of really hard work. IF I HAVE TO, I can do the thing the "long way" and get the same super results. Why the short cut? This has to come off fast, due to the timing of the spot in the show. With all the rest of the show going on - with all the effects being done - with everything else which I am doing on stage, somethings need to get to the conclusion without hitches or long drawn out routines. If you are working table side, then do the long routine. If you are working in front of an audience, then few can really see the effect, and one needs to get the big finish, over and move on. (Think out of this world for example - or - finding the card in an ID after they select a card, and don't show the card) Just two quickies for an audience which goes over big, doesn't require a lot of work -- and -- is well received. In my humble opinion. -- Mitch --
It is easier to try than to prove it can't be done.

I didn't know the DeLand's $100 deck. I've just ordered one now!
I don't performe for a large audience but close up,and a lot with cards so often the routines are quite long. I saw that often people like a lot to se flourishes, one handed cuts, and other good looking stuff. It's seems that some of them accepts the fact that you fool them just because your really good with cards and they don't even try to figure out how simple moves, like a DL, are done. But as you said on the stage is different and I agree with you. If the cards are only a little part of your show it wouldn't make sense to do to complicate things because difficult to follow and it's not so impressive if someone is handling a deck of cards far away from you. I also use trick decks like the ID because some times it's impossible for me obtain some effects in so a clean way! |
