Recent current threads on the topic of religion, but it probably would have seemed more confusing than anything. Not just with the different beliefs discussud lately (theism, deism, Mormonism, JW, B'hai (sp), etc.), and even different views on Christianity, what seems to be the most common view on "hell", if that's a particular belief. I've heard it described as everything from an actual place to just a seperation from god. THe main reason I ask is because there seems to be a "kinder, gentler" view on that than say 20 year ago, but I really haven't discussed that topic lately so maybe it's just me. Jeff

.....may I just add here, that what constitutes nearness to or distance from God mentioned in the two articles above, according to a Bahai perspective is a whole different subject that takes some lengthy exploration..

If you want a kinder, gentler view of what follows death and judgment, try Emanuel Swedenborg.

If it exists, then whoever is responsible for its existence, and is sending people there for innocuous acts or thoughts must be one sadistic hateful son of a botch.

A Mormon friend back in the day was telling me about one of their prophets' visions of all of the different levels in the afterlife. He said that this prophet dude had "toured" all of the different levels and reported back that even the level that rapists and murderers go to is better than anything we can imagine on Earth.
So there's one view. In the Tibetan Book of the Dead, I read that a giant elephant chews up your soul and keeps it in his belly for a while between lives. It doesn't matter if you're good or bad, the elephant eats everybody.

I couldn't find in the OP where you specifically asked for only our individual beliefs on Hell.

Things like "I don't think you should burn in Hell, but it's not up to me, it's up to God". If you believe in a god says I should burn in hell, then don't hide behind the Bible and put all the blame on God. Tell me why you agree, or disagree. I haven't gotten one answer. Nobody should be afraid to stand strong with the god they believe in and agree with him on something he makes so clear (providing your faith teaches that). When I had a close relationship with what I believed was my personal lord, I took pride in telling people they were condemned to hell if they didn't repent and give their life to Jesus. The Bible told me so. Have things changed so much in the past decade? |

I think the Kopimist vision of Hell is SOPA.

I almost miss the good old days when I was active in the church. We went from condoning the stoning unruly children to death and wiping out entire villages (except for the virgins we took with us), to just hating the gays and whining about womens reproductive rights. It almost seems like some people are ashamed about some things in the Bible. I'm not giving up hope though. I'm still hoping someone still stands behind god enough to explain to me why they believe I belong in hell. Are the lovely Phelps family the only people left who aren't afraid to stand up for their beliefs?
And by all means, if you are a theist and DON'T think I should burn in hell, I would like to understand that too. Things seemed to have changed a lot since I've last been in the church and had a relationship with god. If you think perhaps I seem angry or confrontational, it's a possibility from years of being told I'll burn in hell for not sharing a certain belief, but it's much more an interest in learning why people do or don't feel that way. |
