Could anyone of you advise me on some books or material on constructing anagrams?
I have been using MM's Contimental and I like it. However, because of difference of language, I rather try to construct one myself. Will appreciate your advises Sven

Hi there Sven!
It's not that difficult, it just takes a little time to find which words to use. You're from Norway, Im from Sweden, and I used to have a translated version of Contimental, it worked like a charm. You spell the countries the same way, don't you?` If yes, then I see what I can do to sort you out with that swedish version. //Daniel

Hi Daniel
Good to see a Scandinavian here. I don't think there are many of us here. Yes, I guess we spell the countries the same way, and I would very much like to see your work on it if you are willing to share. Regards Sven

Not to be too cranky about it, but as Doug Dyment, the creator of the fine anagram Sign Language, has pointed out on these boards before, there's a world of difference between an anagram and an effective anagram.
An effective anagram will have the minimum possible number of NO responses possible before you get a hit. An effective anagram will cover all possibilities (Contimental, although quite clever, leaves out a number of countries) An effective anagram will never have two NO responses in a row, or will carefully camouflage it when that happens. An effective anagram will have an immediate positive piece of info from the performer after a NO response from the spec. I guess what I'm saying is that to construct an effective anagram, isn't as easy as it may appear to be at first. The danger of anagrams is that you don't want it to look like a guessing game, or it no longer looks like mind reading. That said, Doug's effect is worth looking at as a model for anyone that wants to create their own anagram. Sincerely, jack Shalom

Jack;
Would you tell me how I could get to it? I take it that's in a book he wrote? I made a search on allmagic pages, but couldn't find Sign Language. Sven

Yes, it's available via Doug's website,
http://www.oratory.com/deceptionary/content-p.html Sign Language is a clever anagram for divining a spectator's astrological sign. It's a definite improvement on the anagram in Mind Myth and Magick. Jack Shalom

Brainman;
How can I get to this? I had a look on your homepages without finding it. Eh...whatever it is, is it in German or English? I do hope the latter, my English is not very good, but my German is a catastrophy compared. Got my point? Regards. Sven

Sign Language definitely does depend on the English spelling of the twelve zodiac signs. There are a few linguistic subtleties that are also English based. Sven,
I'm portuguese and I've converted Sign Language to portuguese. I even reduced the number of straight 'no'. I bet you can do the same or better in your language. |

That's good to know, Bruno.
I just talked with Doug who invented this. He is sending Sign Language to me next week and I'm looking foreward to it. I actually got noticed by a Norwegian in all my efforts, who is sending me something too. Thanks to all of you! Sven

Here's a couple of great references on branching anagrams:
"Thabbatical" (Phil Goldstein): Contimental - European Countries Range Rider - Western U.S. States Zodiagnostic - Done with any word chosen from a supermarket-aisle type book on Astrology "Skullduggery" (Leo Boudreau): The Trellis Caper - Done with any random book Sweet Tooth - Cards with pictures of deserts Progressive Spirit - Done with an object's qualities, instead of letters "Life Savers" (Michael Weber): Crosswords - Done with a partially completed crossword puzzle "Semi-Automatic Card Tricks, Vol. III" (Steve Beam): The Memory "ADE" - Card suits "Semi-Automatic Card Tricks, Vol. IV" (Steve Beam): The Memory "ADE" improvement - Any card in a deck "Mind, Myth and Magick" (T. A. Waters): Anagramarye - Done with a large chart of over six dozen words! |

Wow! thanks! I know that Thabbatical has been out of print for years, and that it is difficult to get it. Do you have any leads to where I could try? Sven

For a long time I had a computer program that was given to me that would construct an anagram for any list of words. It did have the problem with two negatives in a row (depending of course which words were put in), but it generally constructed a good anagram for general use.

For the ones who was interested in the Astrolingua:
I neither got very much out of Brainmans brief description nor his homepage in German. However, I found the following review, which gives a little more "meat to the bones" Phantomas' ASTROLINGUA $13 Suggested Retail Price $15 BACK TO MAIN PAGE ADD TO CART JHEFF'S THE BLURB: Astrolingua Created by Phantomas ...just pure mindreading! Inspired by Ray Grismer's "What's my sign," Phantomas has created another practical version of the "Progressive Anagram." Very easy to remember. After a little practice, you will be able to tell your spectators their sign, simply by "reading their minds!" MY COMMENTS: It seems like mentalists need another version of "What's My Sign?" like magicians need another version of Cups and Balls. The Grismer effect is the most widely known and Doug Dyment's Sign Language is considered to be the best version. This one is certainly different from the others I've seen. I've been trying to reference as much as I can while deciding whether to carry this or not. I can't find anything similar to this approach. In this version, you will be saying, at most, four sentences/questions/statements. And they are the same, even when they branch out. That makes this much easier to remember than any other version that's out there. When you finish the sequence, for ten of the twelve zodiacal signs, you'll be left with two possibilities. You have to guess one and have an out for the other. Phantomas supplies five different ways you can do this. There are a lot more. Astrolingua is a 6-page A4 sized manuscript with a clear plastic cover. Three pages explain the sequence and two pages provide brief meanings and info for each astrological sign for your reference. I do like the basic concept. What is most disappointing is that Phantomas doesn't clearly explain how to use the sequence. You must be familiar with this type of effect or you will be confused. I suppose he assumes that you already know the basics and doesn't go into the type of detail necessary for those who are new to this sort of thing. Also, I'm still a bit dubious as to the logic of the step involving the A standing for an animal. If this interests you, then I recommend you first get Doug Dyment's wonderful Sign Language, which provides a very thorough explanation on how to handle this type of effect (unless you've already gotten this, of course). It's available at http://www.deceptionary.com. Also, Andy Leviss' Ramblings and Revelations has a good article on the use of progressive anagrams. In other words, you should be familiar with how progressive anagrams work first. Then you can get Astrolingua for comparison and decide whether this version is your preference or not. OK, I already ordered the Sign Language. I will work with that first, and then concider what to do Regards Sven
