Whilst I recall Art Emerson demming a Flik book which was a nice size to go into your pocket I don't think it was an Emerson and West release. Like other dealers I think occasionally they sold one or two other products they thought were good. Of course, I'm open to being proved wrong, but that's how I remember it (and the 'ol memory is not what it was).

Marty...Great blog! I'm signing up shortly. Excellent research on the 'Color Monte' & '3 Card Monkey Business' connection. Your other link made me chuckle a tad (I guess we're both researchers & magic historians huh), as I've already used it to e-mail Andy Martin with a question about the inventors' name for 'Camouflage'. I'll report the answer if he replies. I've also requested Rod McFadden from the stellar Magic Gadget Site to join this thread. He is a helpful, friendly & super knowledgable bloke that can probably contribute a ton of useful info here. I just don't know if he is a member of the Café. We'll have to wait & see the outcome.

Paul...PM has been sent in reply. As for the 'Flik Flik Painting Book', for sure Art didn't invent it, but I believe he miniaturized it to pocket size. As for it being an E & W release, I am currently unable to confirm either way. I have only seen one instance of attributing it to E & W so far. I'm more or less still counting it as such, basically to keep the numbers & research motivation up You could definitely be right on this one however.

Another non-packet trick by Emerson & West is the wooden apparatus for their version of Val Evans' STOP TRICK OF TOMORROW.

Is this the only wooden trick they ever put out?

No, Keepsake by Art Emerson uses a small wooden coin box. The coin is wrapped in paper, vanishes and then appears back in the box.

Well Marty, if you say it's so, that's good enough for me. I usually like to triple confirm things in these types of projects, but with the scarcity of E & W info, I've had to settle for double confirmation on several occasions.

Julie?...as in 'mad skills' magic history Julie? Welcome aboard! It's great to hear from you. The pc police requested that I modify my old name around here. Our old posts give me a chuckle due to the name change. If you get a chance, re-read them & I think you'll see what I mean. Thank you for your contribution here. There's those mad skills again. This info was unknown to me. The only version I was aware of was Tannen's plexi type. To answer your original question, E & W also put out a wooden trick named 'Keepsake'. It appears to be a winner & is still readily available at a decent price. I do not own a copy, so I am unable to further review it for you. If E & W have more wooden props, I am currently unaware of them. This project is in many ways a learning process for me. If I find more wood props from them, I'll definitely post it here.

Ace In The Case - Larry West (unconfirmed that it was a E & W release)

There is one using two "Solo" cups and two dice. I believe it is called "Talking Dice", but I won't be able to verify this for some time.

It definitely is not called "Talking Dice." I'll get back to you when I run across it again.

Cut-Off appears to be an Emerson & West collaboration. I have this effect and the instructions make no mention of any inventor. It simply outlines the effect first using Arthur’s method and then Larry’s method.

Can someone explain the “Leprechauns” effect? I have a card effect in my collection called Leprechauns but it is not by E&W. It is a Marcoms release. Marcom also released an effect called “The Sheik’s Bequest.”

It was mentioned earlier that magicians collect E&W just like the Tenyo effects. This is true. However, I find the E&W packet tricks more difficult to come by. :-(

I'm not sure Glass Bottle/Bottle Glass by Peter Kane was Emerson and West. I believe Peter produced this himself (on plastic card stock) as a tribute to British comedy magician Tommy Cooper. I bought this from Peter himself and don't recall any reference to Emerson and West on the instructions, though no longer have them to check.

Similarly, I would have thought the Fred Castle stuff would more likely have been produced by Edwin Hooper and The Supreme Magic Co. If you still have the booklet (or anyone has) it would probably mention if printed by Supreme inside.

I'd forgotten about Larry Becker's Vampire Heart, but mention of it reminded me of his Haunted House packet effect. Don't think that was Emerson and West produced either, though I either bought it from Art or from Geoff Maltby at Repro Magic who usually stocked the Emerson and West line in the U.K. Larry had a different version of this in print in either "World of Super Mentalism: Vol.1 or vol. 2.

Pretty sure Kling Ring WAS Emerson and West.

I have the Peter Kane and Fred Castle effects with the original packaging. "Holiday Adventure" and the Peter Kane effect both have "Emerson & West present" printed on them. The "Magic with Giant Cards" by Fred Castle has "Emerson and West - 1981" printed in the lower left corner on the front cover. I was going to upload images but can't get them small enough for the upload.

Did Larry Becker's Hounted House packet effect use picture cards? I collect packet tricks and I'm always on the look out for the older unique effects.

Thanks for that info, Kirk. Maybe I had a version Peter produced himself before selling the rights to E & W? I recall using it occassionally in the late eighties at my first restaurant gig.

The Haunted House effect (if that was the title) used alphabet cards that spelled "House" then "Ghost" and eventually the cards became blank as the ghost disappeared. The later, book version of the effect did away with the required envelope, concluded with the packet being cut face up into a letter deck where the cards finally changed to read 'shock' (a packet trick that actually does have pictures of ghosts on the cards is Mark Leveridge's "Spooks").

Kirk...sorry I can't help you much with 'Leprechauns'. Just too many versions. Most involve a single disappearing/appearing Leprechaun or pot of gold or tophat or some such thing. Btw, you've had a private message for over a week. When you sign-in, a little PM box should appear...just click it.

Dragonash...that Flik Flik book is pretty cool huh. Ever notice that the 'Alphabet' is upside down after you do the flip? Too bad we'll never know the creator of this copy of the old standard effect. My E & W edition doesn't list a name in the instructions. The instructions appear inside both covers only. Did yours include a seperate sheet by chance?
