Nik Wallenda, great grandson of the legendary Karl Wallenda, will attempt to cross Niagara Falls today.
The event is scheduled to be telecast on ABC television, with coverage beginning at 8:00 Eastern. Apparently, against Wallenda's wishes, the network is insisting he wear a safety tether. Good thoughts, Bob |

Yep, very excited. The actual time for the walk is advertised as 10 pm EDT. Almost went to see it live, but it conflicted with an already booked trip to New Orleans.

The economy around Niagara Falls has been declining for years (apparently natural beauty isn't as attractive as it once was), so the government has given Wallenda a special exemption to the ban on daredevil stunts, hoping that this will boost the economy.
Let's hope that it does, and that the boost isn't short-lived. Bon chance, Nik! |

It took many months to do so, and only after Nik submitted a report touting alleged benefits of the walk (economic and others). I don't know if that was the deal maker or not. But if it was just about the economy, I think the Canadian government (anyway) would not have given him such a runaround. It seems there was a lot of support for this event given the historical significance of tightrope walking and the falls going back more than a century. So the part of the report touting economic (and other) benefits may or may not have had a big impact. I really think the historical aspect of the walk was just as important, once the commission was made aware of it. http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/0......a-rules/ The Canadian side, anyway, "set a new policy that allows a professional stunt artist like Mr. Wallenda to perform a similar feat once every 20 years, thereby granting succeeding generations a chance to honor the area’s history of stunting."

He made it! But then again, I would have made it too if I had Mrs. Wallenda waiting for me on the other side.

It was an excellent event. Wallenda talking to his father, to the hosts, to himself and God and everything else we saw, was truly amazing. No one will forget this if they saw it.

It was headlined on the nightly news here in Germany. Well done!
I don't mind him having to wear a safety device of some kind, BTW. |

I can't believe the number of comments on some news sites, though, that denigrate Wallenda's feat in very derogatory terms, stating that the use of the tether made the whole thing easy and removed any element of danger. If anything, it may have actually made it a bit harder given that Wallenda has never worn one before. |

It didn't make it easier; it just made it less dramatic.

It was the network that insisted on the harness and who told Wallenda that the broadcast would be terminated if he attempted to detach the tether. They also broadcast on a 5 second delay just in case Wallenda decided to disregard them. I am angry with the blood thirsty fools in the public who are denigrating the feat. And I agree with you, Lobo, that the tether didn't make it easier. I think it may have actually made it a bit harder since Wallenda had never used one before. But if you look at the comments I was referring to you will see dozens of idiots proclaiming that they could do it too if they wore a tether. Really! |

He said "off" first then quickly said "@ss". That was funny. I also read that the delay was also in case he fell and the tether broke. They had no plans to air a falling death. It was inspiring when, just as reached the first tricky spot, he said "Achieve your dreams, people. Focus on the other side." Then when the customs officals asked the purpose of his visit to Canada, he said, "To inspire people." My parents, who, as most of you know are elderly and sick, slept all day so they could stay awake and watch. As Kevin Connolly said, everyone who saw that will remember for a long time. |

It was not easy our even easier with the harnesses. The man comes from lege. I don see the need some have to downplay his feat.
