Normally, I would agree with you Christopher, regarding the signature.
However, I feel that because both the tearing and restoration are done with obviously open and empty hands, the notion of "switch" doesn't cross one's mind. (There's clearly nothing to switch!) Unlike every other T&R method that requires you to hold out a gimmick or extra pieces, our hands aren't cramped with a "carpal tunnel syndrome" pose, as we try in vein to keep from little windows and flashes from occurring. I believe it's that cramped-hands feeling that telegraphs "switch"--or at the very least, causes a bell to go off in the spectator's mind, telling them that "some manipulation is going on here--even if I don't know exactly what it is" (If only we were all blessed with large skinny hands/fingers, like those of Hollingworth!) An observant layman that enjoys watching my magic, once told me there are two types of tricks that he's seen: The type where he doesn't know EXACTLY how it's done, but can guess a number of possible ways...or the type that he thinks "how is that even POSSIBLE?!" I think Repair falls into the latter category. (For those who have purchased and watched Repair--Keep in mind the effect doesn't begin--in the sepectator's mind--until the action of the tearing begins....likewise, the effect comes to a psychological conclusion when the last piece is restored. Any preamble or clean-up work needs to be done as an afterthought, provided your attitude conveys 'the effect is over'. I think your concern over the need for a signature could be "repaired"--pun intended .....by not ending with the "wiping away of the creases". To me, THAT is the only moment that could telegraph switch. In my view, it's better to end with a creased card. (A much more magical souvenir, in my opinion, as it looks like something has actually happened.) A pristine card tells no story to anyone that views it, once the effect is over. I'd love to discuss my thoughts on how to routine this, with those that are interested, via PM. Best, Keith Jozsef |

I've been performing Guy's routine since he first released it on VHS back in the early 90s (I was one of the 50 people who managed to acquire one of those original copies). In the wake of so many TnR Card versions that have come in its wake, it's still the best, in my opinion. One thing I love about it is that there is no need for such careful alignment of the pieces. Unfortunately, whenever I view some more recent TnRs, it almost appears as if the performer is trying to make sure the glue lines up properly, if that makes sense. With Guy's this sort of thing isn't necessary. It just looks more natural and casual to me.
That said, Alan, I think you're a bloody genius, mate, and I love seeing your new ideas. And based on Keith's review I may have to pick this one up just to see.
It's all in the reflexes.

You are a lucky man Illucifer! To have one of the original VHS tapes certainly had to make the learing curve a bit shorter than trying to learn it from the book alone. I agree that Guy's version is *** near perfect--provided of course, you have the hands to pull it off. The only other plus that I can mention about Repair is the fact that you can be totally surrounded--the only negative to Guy's routine. In fact, that's the biggest problem that I've encountered with all of the other T&R's....when I'm working close-up/strolling, there's no way to avoid having people get a glimpse behind you. (unless you keep your back to a wall all evening!) That single problem has limited T&R to almost exclusively cabaret/stand-up shows, where my sight-lines are under my complete control.
I think the "lining-up" gets better with practice and rehearsal (as does everything, right?). I mean, we're destroying and restoring something in a matter of seconds--I think it's okay if we grit our teeth and furrow our brow a bit, to make it seem like there's a little effort involved....I mean, if it were that easy everybody would be doing it right? |

Right on, Keith. Yes, it's certainly alright by me.
I was lucky, indeed. That was before the internet boom and Guy advertised in a small ad in the back of Genii one month. I pounced on it. He was sending them to the first 50 people from whom he received checks and returning any checks that arrived after that. Being that he was across the pond, I thought I'd never get in on it, but I did. He sold it for $35. Had it been released today as a DVD, I imagine he'd be able to charge three times that. Once 'Drawing Room Deceptions' was released, I sold the tape, as I now have the book as reference if I ever get rusty, but I won't likely, as the routine is etched on my brain. Guy also offered some very nice alternative moves in his book, though having seen him perform it recently in his one-man show, 'The Expert at the Card Table', I noted that he still did it exactly as on the original tape. Old habits die hard, I suppose. Incidentally, when I sold it in 1998, it went for $300, and I'll bet I could've gotten more at the time. Per Guy's desire to never release any more than the 50 tapes, I did not even make a copy for myself.
It's all in the reflexes.

I love the T&R plot and have purchased many versions in the past.
Some are very angle sensitve, some require a lot of pre-work and some just cover too much for it to be an effect. Alan's approach to this eliminates most of these problems. Yes, there is a little pre-work, but as has been said, it doesn't take too much time and can be used again and again. One of my previous purchases was Jordan Johnson's "Holy Grail" - which I used for a while, but took a lot of pre-work. It's kind of a similar setup, but not as much work is needed. To add that this is only £15, you can't really complain! Good work Alan!! (He really is a clever little sausage) |

I don't understand a lot of the thoughts regarding performing T&Rs in walk around.
First off, why are you doing piece at a time T&Rs in walk around? They are so NOT the type of routine to be doing at the tables. That said, I don't get the angle concerns. Yes, there are often people behind you, but your actual audience is situated in such a way that you can have fantastic control over angles. Now I'm not saying ignore the other dinners, if you know there are other tables catching the show, then absolutely, you've gotta be aware of the angles. However plenty of time this shouldn't be an issue at all in your routines.

Hey guys,
This is my review for REPAIR by Alan Rorrison. I currently use STAR, TORN and REFORMATION. I was curious to see what Alan had come up with. I am a T&R fan, and well the download is around 131 MB. The video is almost 30 min long, and Alan goes over everything you need to start doing this right away. I really like this since it is very clever. Its one of those why didn't I think of that moments. I can see it being a worker for a lot of people, and I for one was not disappointed. Where all other TnRs have fallen flat, Alans stands on its own. I will use this, even though Reformation is great, I will be doing this a lot. Setup is easy. No angle restrictions For $24 this is worth it and more. I know some people will be disappointed by the method, but when you think about it, it is very practical and a worker from all angles. Thanks Alex

Hey guys,
Update: Just built the gimmick, and practiced in the mirror, and fooled myself, looks really really clean and good. Worker in all sense, I will be doing this. I am a mentalist and I love this. also, although never thought of buying it, I want to buy pure smoke for the ending, those that have it will know what I mean. Imagine the possibilities. Nice one. My requirements for worker, are that it has a fast reset, no angles, and setup takes less than one min.
what I like about this is that the setup will take you less than 5 min and you are good to go for many performances. alex
