Hello,
I am putting together an entire evening completely centered around Witches in the Fall. It is never too early to start planning. All performances will be on stage for an audience of about 100+. I bought Ipswich and the performance manual and it is a wonderful piece that is sure to be included in the nights events. I would love to hear from those of you who have reviews on items that you have tried or links that might be of interest to an audience of "witches"- Thought provoking is good as is scary. ThanX in Advance! Vanity |

You may want to contact Joe Lantiere,
he has created several "witch" storyline effects, he also created one called the witch potential test (which you would have to be "upscale" it as it was created as a close-up item) but the premise is to see if the initiate has the true potential to become a witch (while teaching them about the solstices and things) here is his website, I'm sure his email is on there (tell him Vlad sent you) http://www.oldeworldmagick.com

Bad witches, good witches or perhaps naughty witches? What is the story line? Story 1st and then trickery latter…..are the witches sympathetic? Carlyle’s Spirit Post Cabinet Séance would make a swell burned at the stake séance…. Go big baby….just sayin

Ok, just off the top of my head. WE NEED AN INQUISTION, *** it!
http://www.outlaw-effects.com/store/gold......tor.html Maybe pre show? Bring the questionable up onstage and keep them busy and scared…….. Tell some stories, make some connections, and investigate the guilty……especially the naughty ones!!!!! In the end you are burned at the stake with Séance revelations from the 1600’s Burn baby burn |

There are plenty of broom illusions available, especially levitations. But in the right hands, this could be pretty cool:

Any permutation of Kurotsuke, with a storyline about the bizarre methods of witch-testing might work...
...a Bell Witch story using a spirit bell or talking board would be interesting too! |

Also consider using Outlaw's WA along with Ipswich. Another perfect union of two effects.

I just purchased Hagstone - but haven't used it yet - but I will say, it's beautiful. The box itself invites curiosity. Good stuff...
But we're talking an audience of 100+. Can something this intimate fly...(I don't know. I'm not a pro...just throwing this out to the experts).

You can have 10 spectators onstage (i prefer 13) and another with the Hagstone to act as the Witchfinder.
Sounds like a stage effect to me. The box would be immaterial in this instance. The participation, building of suspense and finding the witch is important. Use big envelopes rather than letter size. It is perfect for the stage! The beauty is that it can also be played to a small intimate group with only a few participants. Andre

I don't like the whole inquisition story-line for use in entertainment. It's the same as over a hundred years some one will use the gaschambers in auschwitz for a magic effect, it can not be done, in my opinion.
I would like to see the witch potential test though. (would suit in my act), although it is easily created. |

I have performed my new Trials of the Witch Hunter program, which premiered earlier this month, twice now to great receptions. It's geared toward a more intimate audience but could easily play to 100. One audience member described the Witch Hunter as the Coyote and the witches as Roadrunners, so I guess you know where my sympathies lie now. It may interest some of you to know that I don't intend to perform this particular program around Halloween; it gives witches a bad enough name already. And I have scarier stuff for taht season... !
Cirrus' comment about the Inquisition and Auschwitz is actually referenced in my show. The Inquisition Proper burned very few witches, Protestants did ost of that. The Inquisition was far more interested in persecuting Jews and False Conversos and the occasional Cathars.

The Inquisition was far more interested in persecuting Jews and False Conversos and the occasional Cathars. Very true. Many Inquisitors viewed witchcraft accounts as delusions... despite their brutality against heresy, Catholic stormtroopers were educated. I have a routine/story about Hitler that I occaisonally perform. It asks the question of whether you would save the life of a young child, and if you would still save that childs life if you knew he was going to grow up into an individual responsible for great suffering. Some other things I'm working on are a PK 'Nail from the True Cross' bend, torn and restored Masonic charter, a Qur'an booktest and a self-lighting Menorah. I'd do some buddhist stuff, but magic always culturally appropriates from the east. Spiritualism is out too, its been done to death. |

Wow guys! I just logged on in the hopes of finding one answer. ThanX so much for your posts and ideas. I will have to make time later today to re-read each one and look further into them.
I have found that some audiences feel that they know little about witches and their knowledge only goes as far as a few things about the witch burnings. It is important for me to make the connection with the trials in a way that is both sad, respectful yet chilling. There will be a few Wiccans in attendance. I have found that most if not all of the witches that I have met, love it when someone shows their history. I have also found that so many love to think that they hold magical powers without providing any real evidence of it. I am hoping for something chilling. I definately don't want anything I find hokie or childlike so there will be no condeming an audience member to be burned at the stake. I have noticed that most of the things out there are more "find the witch". While I will inevitably incorporate one of those, I am looking for more. I want this performance to have more bite. I have only done ghost type of exhibitions. It is so easy to freak people out with ghost but I am not sure it is as easy to give the same effect with witches. I am hoping that there is a way.
