I apologize for being snarky. I don't think it's so clear cut as I may have said. I think it's pretty much what you said in your last sentence. Certainly frugality is one way to go to achieve financial security, but not necessarily the only or even the best way--perhaps a riskier strategy might lead to more success, I don't know. Maybe all those twenty-somethings hanging out in trendy bars are networking and making connections that will be valuable to them later on. OTOH, there are lots and lots of people in America who are living on jars of peanut butter and Hamburger Helper who will never have enough to own a home, despite their frugality. I agree there are a lot of factors at play, but I think primary weight has to be given to household income.

In the 1950's my father was earning about $7,500 a year. When he bought our house in 1955 it cost about $7,500. The average price for a modest home, then, was very close do a middle class workers average annual income. Hi Bob, Your comment underscores the importance of inflation. Lenin said, "The way to crush the bourgeoisie is to grind them between the millstones of taxation and inflation." Inflation is a hidden tax that robs savers of their thrift. |

What is your solution? The main problem I have is once an elected official of either flavor gets to Washington the answer they seem to be thinking larger government. Both parties keep getting the answer wrong. I am pretty certain thIs give trillion in new debt I 3 1/2 years is not the answer.
