How stupid. My.lord if all polls are like this no wonder they are always wrong. They seem to want to tell a story more than find information.

Polls are usually very specific in the wording of their questions to directly slant the results.

Should polls be vague in their wording so as to make results or analysis meaningless?

I guess I just wish they didn't drive policy.
They are not an analyzation tool. They are now a public opinion shaping tool.

Once, way back in the day, I thought I was being polled. Then I was quoted in the Sharon Herald on the following Monday. Then I called the author, who turned out to be a student who had neither identified himself as such nor told me that I was being interviewed rather than polled. I proceeded to chew him a new one, and I mysteriously never got polled by the Sharon Herald ever again. Not that the Sharon Herald would exactly send reporters to Göttingen to find out what I think about anything.

Some "polls" are actually only devices to allow the "pollster" to get information across to the "polled."

Many polls - probably the most reliable ones - are commissioned privately by strategists on both sides in order to determine where to focus their efforts. Such polls would serve no purpose at all unless they were honest attempts to determine the feelings of the electorate on various issues.
Other polls are obviously used to shape public opinion, but I would suggest those are in the minority and are the least reliable. |

When you see the internals it is telling.
Watching polls a particular campaign used for where to spend money are generally pretty accurate. The rest I date say are hogwash in general. We saw how effective exit polling can be.

And some polls aren't polls at all
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_poll If your poll was particularly partisan or pushing an agenda it was more than likely a campaign ploy and not a real poll.

Like the famous push poll question used by the Bush campaign in its first primary campaign against McCain in Florida. The "poll" question was something like, "Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain if you learned that he fathered a black child out of wedlock?"

Of course, everyone does. But all I was doing here was providing what is probably the most famous example of a push poll question.
Sorry if it upset you. |

Well, then you'd be completely wrong. But that's what happens when you label people without really knowing them. I think a lot of us here are often guilty of that.
The thing about push polls, though, is that the only outrageous examples I could find involved Republicans. I made a mistake, though, the push poll I referred to took place in South Carolina, not Florida: Quote:
Perhaps the most famous use of push polls is in the 2000 United States Republican Party primaries, when it was alleged that George W. Bush's campaign used push polling to torpedo the campaign of Senator John McCain. Voters in South Carolina reportedly were asked "Would you be more likely or less likely to vote for John McCain for president if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" The poll's allegation had no substance, but was heard by thousands of primary voters.[5] McCain and his wife had in fact adopted a Bengali girl. Bush had previously used push polls in his 1994 bid for Texas Governor against incumbent Ann Richards. Callers asked voters "whether they would be more or less likely to vote for Governor Richards if they knew that lesbians dominated on her staff."[6] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_poll#Political_push_polls |

Could you point me to your posts that contain you skewering liberals? Making fun, telling us they are wrong? I don't mean wrong for not spending more or for not being more liberal LOL.
