What card effects, if any, do the workers perform standing up? Twisting the aces? Stand Up Monte? Dr Daley's Last Trick/ Be Honest? ACR doesn't require a table, but I always see a table in performance! On stage, I've seen Skinners Monte performed with jumbo cards, but I'm thinking more of close-up here.
Do some effects actually work better without a table? Also are there any books that deal only with stand up card routines? thanx for any help... Lynn |

In hand Triumph.
The Close up Illusion (ga**) Yes to Twisting the Aces. Spell or count down to a chosen card. (In hand rever** count). Spectator finds a Friends chosen card (via an Hin** Shuffle). Sorry I don't have names for some of these. The last 2 are very simple effects that you can make up as you go (yes I know that's not very pro but it works just fine). Just have a fun premise. -Mary Mowder |

Could you give me an idea of your skill level and performing circumstances?

I'm no expert at flourishes, but I've been doing card magic about 15 years & know for example the effects on Ammar's first 6 tapes, a bunch of Harry's stuff like Halo Aces ... lots of the basic sleights and some wonky stuff. I'm not a professional magician, but....
I've done a few shows like a Bar Mitvah (great for card stuff), a couple of Harvest Festivals, a school show (not as good for cards). But my question is more about the circumstances where you're standing eg in a line with friends and happen to have a deck in hand. Lynn |

To be honest, my advice would be to stand yourself in your living room , dining room etc. No table, and make up some tricks. Worked for me, got a good triumph routine, cards across, acr etc. But also don't forget, you can use the spectators to hold things, in my cards across I ask the spectator to hold the cards etc. Just play around and get used to it, not the best advice maybe. But its what ive done.
Hope this helps, Simon |

Packet tricks:
NFW b-wave entourage full deck tricks: invisible deck breakthrough card system mentalism prediction (can use with the invisible deck) there are probably lots of packet tricks that work well without a table... and there should be plenty of full deck tricks also. I've got a really awesome mentalism card trick that doesn't need a table, you just need a place to set down the card box and a piece of paper basically (or use another spectator to hold it for you). let me know if you want to learn how to do it. it's similar to Knock' Em Dead by Peter Nardi http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqkgA2vbBf4 |

I think I have used a table.....once, in 7 years (joking, but not by much). Most card effects that you would want to do in a walk around working set would not NEED a table. I do Dr.jacob dailys lask trick alot, biddle trick, ambitious card, a bit of jazz, and a few of my own creations (well, at this point they are all kind of my own creations, or atleast mutations of the original).

I normally just 'jazz it' using a classic force, top change, double lift and a palm. I don't even bother with a control these days - I just use a corner short.
If only I could turn back the clock........and save myself countless years learning card material that is only fit for magic sessions with guys at the local club!

Thanx so far. It's been noted that many (if not most) card effects do not NEED a table. But some effects actually work better without a table, like ... good example, Dr Daley's last trick. Also, any books about this? BTW, I learned the hard way about using spectators' hands; ie that they must close one hand over another so as to not peek at the card they're holding.
